You are perhaps being rather unfair here, although I am not 
personally a fan of GIF conversions. The conversion software
initially produces a very poor Ascii image.

Allen Mullen has produced some outstanding work using Gif to Ascii
conversions but to achieve those results he does a lot of work on 
the original conversion. 

If you have ever done a GIF to ASCII conversion using the conversion 
software you will know that the output is quite rough and 
unattractive. It needs a lot of time and effort to produce a good 
picture in ASCII even though it is not original artwork. I regard 
this as valid artwork if the result is a pleasing Ascii image.  

The art is presenting something admirable and interesting in ASCII
is it not ?

I do agree that the most talented Ascii Artists have their own 
unique and recognisable style and are usually prolific in creating 
their artwork...but GIF to ASCII experts are not to be despised. 

There was one picture of Mr Magoo posted just recently which is very
commendable. I have attributed it to the poster but it may well be
