Well, it has everything to do with the word "ASCII", ASCII (which stands for
"American Standard Code for Information Interchange") has started as an American
standard but is now an international standard. All of the other characters look
different in different codetables.

For instance, in Holland we use this char to denote a guilder: �
Which should look like:

     ,-
   -/-
   /
 -'

But chances are that you use a different codetable than i, so if i'd use that in
a picture, the picture would look totally different to you than i intended.

So if we abide to the rules of the American Standard Code for Information
Interchange, all of our pics look the same to everyone.
