Hi :)
'Fixed' is a standard font for X (at least on my Debian GNU/Linux 
system).
'Monospace' is defined as _the_ generic family name for fixed-width 
fonts in CCS: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS1#font-family

That's because they don't follow the definition, then. :)

As for your example (http://www.shieldwolf.demon.co.uk/art-glry.htm):
Since you defined "fixed,monaco,monospace" my browsers displayed the 
<pre>-code in 'fixed' (a specific font!), which is correct.
The generic family name is defined by the last value.
