I had to modify the above in order to fit it into the 74-column
limit traditionally used for online displays. The Queen's Rook is
missing here (from the left side). If you use this for an 80-column
printout the left-side Rook can be added back in.

I modified this somewhat after it was posted here under the name
Vitaliy-Nabis.
Some years ago I posted here ASCII art renditions of various
regular chess pieces as well as other "real" and imagined pieces
for use in chess variants. I'll have to dig up that file and repost
it. Meanwhile, here's some ASCII art for variant chessboards. The
following designs were submitted several years ago by various com-
posers for a 39-square invention contest. Each possible board has
39 "squares" (technically called "cells") rendered in ASCII keyboard
characters. Notation guides are given for ranks (horizontals) and
files (verticals).
