And surprise! My old crappy Newsreader actually rendered them correctly!

Yes, I am highly surprised at that. I after all constructed them by
hacking directly the news server spool file.

Well that was the purpose of the test. :-)

My newsreader and newsserver survived it. Anyone had it go wrong? What
did it look like?

What did the control codes look like? Do I properly interpret that as
little boxes?

Aha. What I had expected to also see. Surprisingly my newsreader did what
the text said it should do.

Well <BS> is standard, ASCII char 8, but its interpretation by
newsreaders is most likely non-standard, at least among all these
newfangled browser based ones (and perhaps others also).
