You probibly tryed typing somthing like "get nice"
or "get not.so.nice".  Those are directories, not files.  If you 
look in those directories, you will find the vt100 animations.
None of the vt100 animations are located in the 
/pub/vt100.animations.  They are located in the further
subdirectories.  This is why you were getting the error "not a 
plain file" using the get command.  The ftp program was right.
It isn't a plain file.  It is a directory.

For those of you who are using a WWW type
program such as lynx or mosaic, you can also try using:

   ftp://ftp.csua.berkeley.edu/pub/vt100.animation
