Proportional spacing?  I don't understand, do you mean a proportional font?
If all your letters are not the same size then you are using the wrong font,
but I thought (since this seems to be DOS) that DOS only had one icky
monospaced font?

These two lines should line up for you (with spaces & all):

Oh wait, rereading this I see what you mean.  You _should_ be using fixed
font.  Any editor that is 'sophisticated' enough to manage proportional
fonts *should* have an option to make it monospaced.  If it supports
TrueType Fonts, tell it to use (for example) Courier New.

If you change fonts from monospaced to proportional, or proportional to
monospaced, or even from one proportional font to another, then the
apperance _will_ change, almost by definition.  That's a (sad) fact of life,
and the reason we have different fonts. . .

As far as I can remember, "hard space" *IS* the space bar.. if you mean a
"soft space" or a "non-breaking space" or a "sticky space" then the
(Windows) character is ALT-0160.  But beware that 99% of the people on this
group will flame you if they find out you're using it.
