You contradict yourself. Any character for which you must use Alt is by
definition a non-ASCII character. (You *can* use Alt for ASCII
characters, but even krazy keyboarders like me prefer the QWERTY keys.)

The following characters might display differently on a very small number
of machines (the names I give are what these characters SHOULD display as): 

   # $ @ -- number sign, dollar sign, commercial "at" symbol
   [ \ ] -- left square bracket, backslash, right square bracket
   ^ ` ~ -- circumflex accent, grave accent, tilde
   { | } -- left brace (or "curly bracket"), vertical bar, right brace
