  .tgz is just shorthand for .tar.gz (probably invented by someone
using ms-D'OH!s 8.3 filenames)

if your tar command supports it, -z will gunzip a file on the fly:

tar -zxvf xxxx.tgz

will do the trick.

otherwise,

mv xxxx.tgz xxxx.tar.gz
gunzip xxxx.tar
tar -xvf xxxx.tar

  Probably don't need all the fiddling with filenames, just said it to
make sure...
