question about ;) etc.

Hello,

Could anyone tell me the proper term used to describe those tiny,
2, 3, or 4 letter ascii images that frequently appear in e-mail
and usenet text? I've seen smiles, frowns, roses, and many
more. It seems to me that they're called "emotitrons" or
something similar.

Also, in addition to the name of these small images, I would like
to know if there's a web site or other source that shows a
variety of them.

This is for a research project, so your e-mail response will be
appreciated.
