Although I'm not an Ascii Guru, I don't think I would be too far off the
mark by saying that the above mentioned problem is the result of your
messaging system changing the font (i.e. you draw the picture using Ms Sans
or Courier, and your system changes it to Arial during transmission - or,
more accurately, at the point of receival).  I've been playing around with
some ascii art to put at the end of each message also, and this has been
true in my case.  Using MS Exchange, I would copy the image (I even rebuilt
it from scratch once) into my new message window using courier - most ascii
art is better representated with a non-TT font (or so I've heard), sent it
to myself, but received it in Arial.  Because Arial is a much more narrow
font, the image "loses" its "formatting" (or so it seems, when in actuality
each space and character is there, but they are smaller in width). 
Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution to this problem, outside of
building every image in Arial.  Of course, I can change my default font to
be something other than Arial, but this obviously won't solve the problem
(unless I can get a hold of B. Gates and have him change to standard
worldwide <::chuckle::>).  Anyhow, I hope this at least answers your
question.  Not too much help, though, I'm afraid.  Perhaps someone more "in
the know" than I could post a real solution to this problem...
