Okay, how about this:

I realize that it doesn't look exactly like an interruption this way
but at least there is no doubt that Fanboy is saying "Um" (When I
first read the strip, I thought that Nerdboy had said "Um" because he
was trying to sidestep from saying such terrible things about Mandy. 

However, I find I can't let go of wanting to see that brief moment of
silent horror and still want you to:

Ah, this is where you can employ your voice-over with "a fraction of a
split second later" over top of the otherwise wordless second frame.
As you say, Nerdboy is failing miserably at thinking on his feet so
for him, time would appear to stand still at that terrible (for him)
moment.

I'm not familiar with that unsubtle style. Happily, it has been eons
since I have seen a Popeye cartoon.
