Why? Ascii art isn't usually computer code, although there were some
pretty artistic entries to the International Obfuscated C contest a while
back...

Well spoken. <code> is for C or Java or Perl (or whatever) source code; 
text that can be fed into a machine to make it do things. <tt> (teletype -
yow!) would be OK for one-line art, but the usual rendering scrunches
spaces. Using the block-level <pre> element is almost certainly the Right
Thing as whitespace isn't squelched, and every reader is supposed to
display it as-is, in monospaced type.

Alternatively, just present the art as plain text files; Unix flavour for
preference. I'm sure nobody will mind if colour doesn't matter :)
