Not The Flamenco but a dancer

Not The Flamenco but a dancer

alt.ascii-art · 25 messages · 4 Aug 1998 - 11 Aug 1998
The discussion about flamenco dancer is going to be alive.
So, i decided to create and post yet another dancer graphic.
I have no doubt it is not flamenco, it is not the Dark Side
of the Sun.

Picture is more realistic but unfortunately it is mono-ascii. It
should be visible only when background is significantly darker then
foreground. The graphic is (personally, for me) an exercise in ascii
gradients painting. Please, let me know is the effect visible on your
system/viewer/newsreader and do you accept such mono pictures.

Regards,
  Staszek

Whilst this style works well with your large portraits I find it
very unclear and indistinct in complete figures such as the dancer.

I tried reductions using resize.exe but I am not certain they look
much clearer.

Great thanx for all answers. As i wrote it was exercise. Till now
the "unclear and indistinct" wins two to one the "visible". So, should
you have any idea how to make it clear ? A few tries give
that using more contrast characters kill the foggy lamp efect.
Any ideas ?

I was hoping you would really develop your portrait-style which looked
quite novel when you first began posting but you seem to be trying
out other forms of ascii-artwork which are _not_ new or innovative.

The best artists have a recognisable individual style which
permeates all their pictures.

Row ( Rowan Crawford ) was fond of using letters in his line
drawings. I don't like them and I actually told him so when he was
posting to this newsgroup...but he liked it and that was Row's
style.

Henry Segerman uses F & J all over his pictures...I don't like that
either...but that is Henry's individual style.

Normand Veilleux loved '8' :-)

Allen Mullen likes expertly diddled GIF to ASCII conversions.

Joris Bellenger aka b'ger has a sort of "shadow style".

Me? I don't have a style...I'm mainly a crappy diddler/mutilator of
other people's pics.

Maybe I'm just blind. I don't see the dancer. I see a girl's face, looking
off to the right. Her mouth is just to the left of Stanislaw's name, her
nose just above it. she's wearing a wide brim hat, and her eyes are around
where the /+ symbols are... Does anyone else see this? I thought I was
supposed to see flamenco dancers? Am I just confused?

It's a very _nice_ girl's face... Even if it wasn't meant to be that...

Methinks 'tis a zoom'lens view of the dancer.....though I could be
wrong, of course.

What *are* you saying Colin? The drawing definitely has the same airy
recognisable individual style that the first wonderful portrait had.
It's just not quite as successful.

Am I wrong, Stanislaw, that you have some background behind the dancer?
What would happen if you reversed the characters and used the more solid
-:+;;=*+|=+ for the girl's
dress and the .... . .... for the background? Of course this might
mean changing the type of characters in her legs. But maybe not. I just
viewed your drawing with a size 3 font and I really think that the
reversal might be the answer.

I love the motion that you have achieved.

Maybe you could work a little on her head as well so that it is obvious
which way her head is turned. In the larger drawing it looks like you
have her looking back at her raised hand (a very nice idea) but in the
size 3 font, she appears to be looking straight ahead.

I'm saying I think his style is innovative and successful with the
large portraits/faces but that it is not successful used in smaller
pictures like the dancer. Lots of viewers will struggle to even see
a dancer there.

The author asked for opinions, I gave mine, you have given yours.
We don't have to agree do we? I don't care for fuzzy indistinct
pictures.

To Sarah and Tony Day, Cyd and Nosmo:

You unfortunately caught last posts in longer discussion :)
The graphics you see is the "Face 1" which i posted few weeks ago and
is not the topic of this thread.

Story so far:

Few days ago, when the "Flamenco Dancer" thread has appeared after a
long time silent, i've created and posted an *experimental* graphic. The
graphic was *mono ascii* i.e. it was visible only when the background
(of your chars) is darker than foreground. (The white characters on the
black background, for example). The question was: Is the effect
visible/clear on your screen ? It is important question because there are
many various terminals and systems with various font glypths which gives
the various gray rate when glyphs are concatenated.

The first receptions has gave the result:

                          visible | not visible
                          ----------+---------------
                              1 | 2

After results was first time summed up, llizard send a post
with important (for me) technical suggestions (i asked for). His post
changed the current results (personal opinion) to this:

                          visible | not visible
                          ----------+---------------
                             1.5 | 2.5

The graphic is below. Please, send your impression about this one.

Actually I do think he has been experimenting with other, more

portrait work that has gone before.

The whole thing about agreeing and disagreeing is pretty wierd, if you think
about it. If 2 people disagree with eachother all the time, they have agreed
to diagree about everying, which means they agreed on something, but the are
not agreeing on anything...I could really drive you nuts if I went on about
this, so I'll quit.

I found the "gradient" style picture of the girl's face beautiful, I found the
"gradient" style picture of the flamenco dancer not as beautiful, but
Stanislaw is planning to repaint the latter picture.

Intuitively, I would say that the gradient style is predestined for still life
pictures, and portraits should play a prominent place here. Perhaps Stanislaw
should try to portrait Einstein. Another area of application that seems to
lend itself to the gradient style is that of dual pictures like the one that
shows the ugly face of an old woman and the head of a pretty young lady in one
and the same interwoven pic.

Depicting motion solely with the gradient style will be difficult, if possible
at all, at the low resolution of ascii pics of less than a hundred characters
across. The flamenco dancer has used elements of the solid style to depict
motion. It may be more purposeful to use elements of the line style to depict
motion in the form of swirls, swishes and similar.

In any case, the gradient style is a new style equivalent to the solid and
line styles in ascii art. My congrats to Stanislaw!

I have to appologise for myself but I looked at it again for seeing what it
was meant to be. But I guess it's really hard to see it the right way. I'm
having black on white here, and with marking the picture it was hard to tell
for the right side wasn't even (some lines are shorter than the others and my
netscape news doesn't highlight the whole line :( ).

Look, look, look, Spunkystein commenting on my article, but ... Normand's pic
is solid style, not gradient style.

The reason I pointed out the dual picture example is that the eye can
interpret the slope in a gradient picture in two different ways. If the eye
interprets the slope to go one way, it sees one picture, if the eye interprets
the slope to go the other way, it sees the other picture.

Why not just change the background? View the
pic as white on black and then as black on white.
The eye will have to interpret the characters
in the opposite way- same as gradient.

Look, look, look, Spunkystein seeking a discussion in spite of stating otherwise!

But of course, you missed the point of dual pictures my dear. The point of
dual pictures is to see two different pictures in one and the same exhibit,
without changing anything in the exhibit.
