New Software For Creating ASCII Art
alt.ascii-art
· 13 messages · 14 Feb 2003 - 2 Nov 2003
I wrote a little Windows program that converts pictures to text art.
It works with 12pt Arial as well as with the usual ASCII fonts. It's
easy to use and it's free. You can download it from:
http://hometown.aol.com/PeaJammie/pictexter.htm
The software is a work-in-progress, so Let me know if you have
suggestions, complaints, etc.
Here's an example of what it can do...

I just uploaded a new version... 1. Added the ability to import GIF files. 2. Fixed bug that occasionally generated an incomplete design on Win98. 3. Added a label for each of the 2 modes, so now it's easier to see which mode you're in. 4. Changed the default mode from Arial to Courier. 5. Added label to help section, and added file format info to help. http://hometown.aol.com/PeaJammie/pictexter.htm
Topnotch picts PJ - am nu to this kinda stuff usually got my hands involved with sounds not pictures, I really fancy a go tho' and any help/ how I can get my MAC into action and what apps are available to such a 'puter is really welcome. . .
Thanks Lucy... sorry about the program not being MAC-compatible. You may be able to run it if you have a Windows emulator installed on your MAC. I am actively looking for a way (hopefully free) to port my apps to the MAC, but I don't know when it'll actually happen.

There's a Java-based program for creating/ converting to ASCII-Art, named Jave, http://jave.de. This might be run on their Mac. Bye... -- * http://www.christiankuhlmann.de *
I just uploaded what will hopefully be the final version for awhile. 1. Added Equalize, Sharpen, and Threshold filters. 2. Added "status" messages to the import/convert process. 3. Added the ability to export to several different image formats. 4. Adjusted the program's layout to compensate for the new features. 5. Updated the help section to reflect the updates. I hope you find the updates useful. http://hometown.aol.com/PeaJammie/pictexter.htm
I couldn't live with the canned interface elements & ineffective layout. For version 1.1: 1. Completely redesigned the interface in order to make better use of the available space. 2. Added a standard Windows menu for easy access to all of the functions. 3. Added keyboard shortcuts for each function. 4. Added "tooltip" messages for each function. 5. Made rulers clickable in order to improve the functionality of the width slider. 6. Added error checking for CMYK JPEGs. 7. Added "About" screen with button linking to AxiomX.com. 8. Updated the help section to reflect the updates. http://hometown.aol.com/PeaJammie/pictexter.htm
For version 1.2
1. Added a preview image of the image being worked with.
2. Added resizing on the fly via the sliders, rulers, and filter
checkboxes.
3. Changed the function of the "Clear" button to clear the current
image & workspace.

For version 1.5: (I skipped 1.3 & 1.4 since it's a big upgrade.) 1. Added control that allows user to specify the threshold level. 2. Added Posterize filter with level control. 3. Added "Simplify" checkbox, which allows user to select between the Threshold and Posterize filters. 4. Improved the picture>text conversion algorithm. 5. Simplified the Arial character set to allow for wider posts on Abuzz. 6. Removed the internal "Help" section, and replaced it with a link that opens "readme.txt". 7. Fixed bug that caused error when using a width of 37 characters. I hope you enjoy this version :) http://hometown.aol.com/PeaJammie/pictexter.htm

The only bad thing is the platform limitation. You may want to take a look at the jpeg2text and jpeg2ascii web based programs on my site. http://www.jdneff.com/ JD Neff

I like your programs... simple but very usable with good results. I thought about adding a "negative" function to my app, but decided against it since I didn't think people would use it. After seeing it in your program, I'm having second thoughts ;) At the moment I'm working on a color text function similar to yours, and on a feature to automatically add frames. Eventually I'd like to add some of the drawing and painting functions from a program I wrote last year. Have a look: http://www.axiomx.com/PixelToolbox/index.htm About PicTexter's platform limitation - I was thinking about creating a Shockwave version... probably will :) PJ
Hi folks, I just uploaded version 2 of PicTexter. This version adds compose module--which allows you to combine more than 1 picture in a single window, and a Color HTML module--which creates a page of full-color HTML text. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you. http://hometown.aol.com/PeaJammie/pictexter.htm V 2.0 (3/16/03) 1. Redesigned and rearranged most of the user interface elements. 2. Added "Compose" and "Color HTML" modes. 3. Added Negative filter. 4. Added "Insert" command to the Courier and Arial modes that works in conjunction with the new "Compose" mode. 5. Adjusted the Equalize filter to output in color. 6. Reduced the dimensions of the preview image to make room for new functions. 7. Added prompt to "Clear" function to prevent unintentional deleting.
