Does size make a difference?

Ok, most of us have been told most of our lives that size does not make a
difference. Then when we aged, we learned that we have been lied to our
whole lives. The fact is, size makes a huge difference. Now, relating my
little rant here to the topic of ascii art, I was just wondering how
everyone seems to like to see stuff.
Personally, before I started making my own, I copied some other
peoples, and if it did not take up a fairly sizable amount, I felt there
was just no reason to bother copy it. Then again, if I saw anything that
took up too much room, I would not bother copy it either. Stuff like Row's
seemed to be consistantly in the right range. Basically, little left to
the imagination, and never more than a 80X20 screen in size. So that is
how I started doing mine, and so far, I like it.
Someone mentioned here earilier, shakara or however you correctly spell
the name, that they liked smaller stuff, but personally, it took me almost
two weeks to figure out what llizard's sig was! (and I still don't get any
of the one-line lizards I saw last week) There is some really great small
stuff, like joan's, but most of it seems almost indistinguishable from the
rest to me. Not that I'm saying llizard does bad work, because he has
some very nice art as well, I am just saying that alot of small stuff leaves
me blank, which is hard to do.
And like I said, I agree that anything more than an 80X20 screen I don't
even bother look at anymore. 99% of it is just made from scanning something
into a computer and I don't consider that art. The rare original stuff of
that size is still just too big to look at.
Anyway, just wondering what other's opinions are? (obviously, the perfect
way would be to be good at both, as joan has many small things, and does
large things on occasion, such as her cock-a-too on her index web page) Just
wondering what people seem to prefer.

The reason I started doing any kind of ascii-art was for sigs. I was under the impression that anywhere but this newsgroup, sigs are not supposed to exceed 4 or 5 lines. That is one reason why my drawings are mostly small. The other is that I have always been entranced by miniatures and the fact that they leave a lot to the imagination. I don't want everything spelled out for me. Other people's drawings that I prefer do not require any moving of the page to see the entire drawing (that means they can't be larger than 18 lines). Most of Joan's, Shanaka's, Joris' fall into my preferred category for non-sig drawings. I think we are generally in agreement then on size preference, although I really do like the little ones that are clearly what they are depicting. Look at these horses by I don't know who. However, just to show that not only don't I attempt just small things and that I break my own size restriction of 18 lines or less, here are some things I think are entirely unsuitable for sigs. _ /) mo / ) |/)\) /\_ \__|= ( ) __)(__ ________+_______/ \_______+__________ - --_ _-| _ _ |---_ - - __-- |/_|) \ |\||\| /||_| /|-_-- __ _ --_ - |\/|\/-\| ||/|/ ||_|// | -_ - _-- - |_____ __________ _____|_ -- _ -_-- __ || | | | {| /| | || __--- -_ --__- || | | | {| /|| | ||-- - || | | | {| /||| | ||__-- __-- -__|| | | | {| |}||| | ||-- __-- ||_|_|_|_{| |}|||_|_|| -__ --__- -|| | | | {& |}||/ | ||--- __-- || | | | {| |}|/| | ||-__ -- __--|| | | | {| |}/|| | ||__-- -__ -- || | | | {| &}||| | || __ --- __-|| | | | {| |}||| | ||_---__- -- - -_ || | | | {| |}||| | || -- __ejm 97|| | | | {| |}||| | ||_--__- _--- _________||_|_|_|_{| |}|||_|_||______________ |}|/ |}/ |/ _\< ( > __)( _____/ // ___ / \\ / \\__ | _ // \ || | | \ \\ / _ || | | | \\/ | \ || | |_/ |/ | | || | | \ /| |_/ || | | \ \| | >_ ) | | \. _|\ | < _|= | /_.| . \/ * | * ** / * ** |\)/) ** \))ejm97/.,(//,,..,,\||(,wo,\ ).((// - \) phoenix \) /) () /;< ( /;;< ' Ww|;;< ' ' vvv;;/ vv;/Vv ' ' vvv Vv ' VV Vv ' ejm97 ' \\ Vv m m V ' V ' ' ' V ' ( v ) ' ( ) ' ( ) ) ( ) ) ' (( ) ( ) _ -._ )) ( === ^^ / \ =(< > ) =( \ / \=\==\ ' ^^/ ='== /' == '-.>_.- ===^^ / == ==== / === ^^^^ === | == === \ |==' == ^^ ^^^^ ^^ ^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^ ^^ NOTE: If you hit the reply button, add an "e" to the "freent"; its absense is to stop the torment of automatic mailers. -- _____ Hmmm.... And asciis loose a lot of their originality with a bigger size. I've always preferd small - say - pencil sketches because for that effect. Eg for a 10m x 10m pictures the drawing technique doesn't matter much any more. But I do like your pictures very much anyway. :) Andreas _ | Ascii Dictionary (Collection, Links, ...) | o | http://www.stud.uni-hannover.de/~freise | o <<.|_ _| < > |\ |

Well, but a cathedral made out of matches reminds me of those big asciis. If I ever come across a cathedral made out of - say - 10 matchsticks I'd think : 'hey! I still think that llizard is much better at the little ones.. I find them so very tough to do... And perhaps I really should not have stated, "smaller is better"-- I meant that smaller is more of a challenge-- and a good small ASCII is a great accomplishment. If I had two great ASCII pictures of the same thing-- one large and one small-- I would have to say that the smaller one was better just for the sheer challenge of creating it.
