Fortuyn challenged one of the fundamental principles of liberal Dutch
culture: Thou shalt not be seen as intolerant. Immigration and
immigration-related crime are not new problems in the Netherlands, but
the ability to speak openly about it is. For years, the ruling elite,
which includes the media, has made discussion of the growing immigration
problem taboo, on pain of being branded a crypto-Nazi....
Pim Fortuyn was assassinated May 6, 2002, outside a radio studio in
Hilversum, The Netherlands.
