why is it when i d/l "figlet-unix.tar.Z",
i end up getting a file in my directory called "figlet-unix.ta" ???
i hope someone can help me with this.
BTW. is there another site with the figlet program
without all the fonts compressed together?
i know the /pub/Scarecrow/Font directory also has this
program, but i d/l it (yes with binary) and it doesn't work!

I suspect you're unix is limiting your file length. I know that at least some xenix systems do this, probably other "older" unix OS as well. That way, you immediately reduce the number of fonts (and they DO take up a lot of disk space!!!), while at the same time increasing the versatility and variability of the number of possible fonts that are possible, all from a single set of "basic" fonts! (Sorry Glenn... yet *another* suggestion to put on your improvements-to-figlet-list! :-) This is one of the current problems with figlet - too many damn fonts that take up too much damn room - a pain to choose an appropriate font, and a pain when dealing with trying to keep a reasonable number of fonts in an account with a limited quota space! There was some discussion a while ago to have "compressed font files" to deal with the space font files took up. This idea is a great alternative (or adjunct) to this problem. Another point - most of the fonts I like to use are the smaller ones. The bigger fonts, while looking nice, just tend to "scroll off" the line and break up words! What font authors need to do is concentrate on developing a set of basic fonts (or reviewing the current fonts) to concentrate on the basic style (eg straight or slanted etc) and the SIZE (ie height and width) of the fonts. The actual result of the font may be relatively simple, but with imaginative use of the "tr" command, all sorts of interesting fonts become possible. Of course, there are several fonts that are rather unique and wouldn't fit into the category of being "basic" (acrobatic.flf comes immediately to mind), but the general principle holds. The next version of Figlet should:
o Use standard Figlet .flf fonts (to be backward compatible)
o Use standard Figlet .flf.Z and .flf.gz fonts in compressed format.
o Use a new system of fonts that are made up of three parts:
- Files containing letter shapes.
- Files containing fill patterns.
- Files containing backgrounds.
o Have many functions and variables controllable by the user, such as
replacing the characters in a fill or background file.
o Be able to change the variables from letter to letter.
o Be able to save, open, and manipulate work files. These files
would contain text, info on which Figlet font or font creation
files were used for a particular job, user controlled variables, etc.
o Should be able to control everything by commands in a file that can
be fed to Figlet.
o Keeps its files in compressed format (to save disk space).
o Keep all uncompressed data in memory, no writing to disk.
o Have a version for the Mac.
I could think of more, but then I'm not the person who has to write
all this. It would be a great to have, but I know how much work that
is. Hey, maybe the Figlet folks could get added help from volunteer
programmers. What do you say, Figlet folks and programmers?

I use a Mac at home and so does Glenn, but our reaction is "why?" After all, Macs come with super fonts already... and if you're using it for email, you'll have access to a unix box. But then I thought of all those Eudora users... well, if someone wants to implement it for the Mac, I have no objections. You'll have to ask Glenn that. I'm the only non-Glenn person who's ever written any Figlet code, and that was way back in version 0.9. But to just expand compressed files shouldn't be that involved. The ability to expand both .Z and .gz should maybe add 15 or 20 K to Figlet. This is just a flakey guess on my part. HyperCard is about as far as I've gotten in programming. But I think that expanding files is little more than grabbing a look-up takle and subbing strings for tokens. True. I guess I'm being anal, but it dislike small temp files. I understand when a big graphics program has to keep a big vm file. The other day, I got an ad for a $30 program that cleans up your Windows hard disk of extra stuff for you! Imagine that! You actually need to PAY for a program to CLEAN UP??? It seems that they are in need of assistance. It would be good if they could find some knowledgeable person(s) who have some time to deal with the questions concerning Figlet that appear on these groups. Again, I'm not complaining. Just my opinion, but I like the name "Poison" (as opposed to "Blood
Dripping") for this figlet (piglet) font. My opinion may not count

If Glenn were paid $200,000 a year to do Figlet and nothing else, why, he can forget that old Math Ph.D. altogether and go into full-time Figlet mantainance and upgrades! There'll be figlet versions for every whim and fancy! There'll be ports to every machine under heaven! Heheh...
