39-cell ascii chessboards, part 1

There were 14 entries in the 1998 contest for 39-"square" chess-
boards, which commemorated the 39th birthday of the organizer of the
website that became www.chessvariants.com. I drew up ascii diagrams
for all of them but I believe this is the first time these ideas
have been publicly published anywhere in 1) ascii format, and 2)
analyzed and categorized by concept.
So as to avoid super-lengthy postings, I'll break this down into
several smaller postings.
VARIETIES OF 39-CELL BOARDS:
