The trick I remember is from a long time ago, some teacher told us a
way of remembering which is which- go by the c and the g: a stalaCtite
sticks tight to the Ceiling, while a stalaGmite goes up from the Ground.

I saw it in some D&D book some time ago (Monster Manual?)... It looks
like a stalactite, and might have some treasure underneath it as bait-
when you walk underneath it, it drops on you, piercing through and most
likely killing you. Then I guess it'll eat you or something... :> Don't
ask me how it gets back up there, though... :>

Yes, I had a suspicion. That sort of thing might be deviating from the
original request, though.. Sounds more of a trap than a monster..
