JMOV Ascii Animation with sound support
alt.ascii-art
· 10 messages · 23 Dec 2001 - 30 Dec 2001
Hi,
I finally found a few minutes time to add basic sound support to the
JavE-Player Applet. There is a litte demo movie online where you can see
two types of sound support:
http://www.jave.de/player/demo/demo8.html
For those who do not want to load the applet I have attached the
animation as scrollbar-animation at the end of this email.
This is my very first hand made ascii art animation - feel free to
diddle.
BTW: Who recognizes (w/o looking at the applet first) the great computer
game the scene is from?
For those who want to find out more about jmov animations and the new
player have a look at:
http://www.jave.de/player
For questions and comments please send me a note - but do not expect me
to answer before 2002 :-)
Regards,
Markus

Who doesn't recognize Bubble Bobble ? Great game .. I can download it today from c64.com and play it on my C64 emulator if I want. One thing I didnt see was a link to Download the new player, or information on adding in the event cue. I did DL the demo zip and will look in there momentarily. Will this run in the current editor? Answers to these and more questions I am sure to have later may become apparent shortly, but I do wish there was more Documentation. I do enjoy a puzzle once in a while, but .............

The editor will be able to add/remove sound triggers in the next release of JavE. > Answers to these and more questions I am sure to have later may become apparent > shortly, but I do wish there was more Documentation. I do enjoy a puzzle once > in a while, but ............. Ok, you are right. I am not very strong at documentation. You have to look at the jmov specification at http://www.jave.de/player/jmov_specification.html to find out all about the new applet parameters SOUND and SOUNDSTART and about the new sound trigger event # in the jmov file. You can download the player form: http://www.jave.de/player/javeplayer12.zip And its source code: http://www.jave.de/player/javeplayer12src.zip Well, here is all (I think) you have to know about sound support: * The sound file must be in *.au format, recorded at 8 KHz, mono, in mu-law encoding. If your audio clip is in a different format (e.g., .wav) or a different frequency it must be converted to the exact specifications above before Java can play it. To convert files from different formats search your favorite for GoldWave for Windows, sox for Unix and similar conversion utilities for other systems. * To add the sound file to the applet add an applet parameter, for example: <PARAM NAME="SOUND" VALUE="waltz.au"> * To specify the way to play the audio file specify another applet parameter: <PARAM NAME="SOUNDSTART" VALUE="EVENT"> Valid values are: "EVENT": To start the sound file event driven (at a certain frame - one or more) "ONCE": To start the sound file right when starting the animation "LOOP": The same as ONCE, but the sound file will be played looping endlessly. * For the event-driven sound playback you have to manually (at the moment) add a line containing only # in the jmov file right after the frame(s) where you want to play the sound file at. Example: J:A61 8 %0%10 /\%0%7 __/ \._%21 .%3-.%0%7 \ J:A61 8 %0%10 /\%22 .%3 .%0%7 __/ \._%20 .- . # J:A61 8 %0%10 /\%0%7 __/ \._%0%7 \ ,-,-.\ Playing the sound file will start when showing the second frame. It downloads a 1KB zip file that is empty. I did track it down backwards-like from the demo page, it can be found here: http://www.jave.de/player/demo/javeplayer.jar . After looking at the [revised] parameter list, i ended up doing the same thing as above, downloading and poking through the demo movie. What I saw was the '#' was in a line by itself, after the desired frame location. You can: 1. Open the .jmov in a text editor (like Notepad) 2. Track down the frame you want -look for landmarks, e.g.-in my movie[ish abomination], http://ice.prohosting.com/wdxl/birdshot.html (change .html to .zip to download, and don't forget the sound file), the line containing the frame I was looking for had "swoosh" in it. 3. Enter the '#' -I simply hit Enter after the lines I wanted to tag, and then # on it's own line. Like this: <snipped top> J:A16 3 %4|%3 _ |`',|%0%3|{ (V)%5|%0%3|%4=#*swoosh* # J:A16 3 %4|%3 _ ,%0%3|{ (V)%0%3|%4=#%8= <snipped bottom> 4. Make/Download/Convert the sound -A little trouble here, too. My latin isn't great, but isn't mu the one that looks like a funky 'u'? Mu-formating was mentioned in Mr. Gebhard's documentation, but it wasn't working for me (if I had the right letter). I tried converting in Sound Forge XP, then GoldWave (as suggested). The format that DID work, refered to as "Sun(*.au), Java/Web, mono", was in GoldWave. 5. Write in the parameters -For the both EVENTs and LOOPs: <PARAM NAME="SOUND" VALUE="soundname.au"> -For EVENTs: <PARAM NAME="SOUNDSET" VALUE="EVENT"> -For LOOPs: <PARAM NAME="SOUNDSET" VALUE="LOOP"> You know, I just perused a little more, and most of this -is- documented, look at http://www.jave.de/player/index.html#news , there's a table with a lot of the information I just rambled. It does leave me (or more acurately, I will leave you) with a couple more questions, can multiple sounds be used? If they can, can they also use different SOUNDSETs? Right, I have added it today. It is the same as I already have postet to this newsgroup as answer to MJPs questions. > It does leave me (or more acurately, I will leave you) with a couple more > questions, can multiple sounds be used? If they can, can they also use > different SOUNDSETs? No, not yet. I have thought about multiple sound support - at least for the event triggered sound it might be very useful. But I wanted to test it all with a single file at first. I will not have time to think about multiple sound files during the next months or so, so maybe this could be the first thing someone else could take care about. At the moment it is an open source project with only one developer... However I already have some ideas: The event trigger could be extended to #:1, #:2,... for support of multiple event sounds. In the applet parameter one would have to add multiple files, too, e.g.: param="SOUNDFILE1" value="event_sound_no_1.au", etc. Maybe it also would be a good idea to add the names of the sound files in the jmov rather than specifying it in the applet parameters... For the moment I have to care about christmas, family, etc. And I need some relaxing from the hard work on JavE etc. Now it is your turn: I am looking forward for seeing (and hearing!) new jmovs :-) Markus -- \-/ http://www.jave.de O_< Get JavE now! \-/ J|a|v|E /| J|a|v|E /-\ Ascii-Art for eyeryone / \ - for free! /-\

Multiple Event, Multiple sound will be great #:sound1.au #:sound2.au if .mid and .au use different sound engines( I think they do) you might even get midi as a background (loop or start type control) and have .au events (mutiple sounds supported) it would be nice if you didnt have to declare the sounds in the html, but that isnt too hard so if you have to then thats ok. Anyway Merry Christmas to those that celebrate Happy Monday to the rest ;)
