to make it look better in fonts where ~ is placed at the same height
as -.

Well, one could always cheat a little and not draw the bottom of the
triangle:

    /'/\`\
   | /AA\ |
    \.__,/
  
In fact, if you left out the two underscores on the top line, that'd
be three lines and still more or less recognizable.

Or maybe a dottier circle would look better?
