QUESTION: Line Length

How long do you think I should set my line length to be? I know it's
annoying when pics wrap in Netscape, but I just got Free Agent and it's
awesome. I would think at 72 lines, or can readers do more?

Pete Casso did a report on this topic a while ago  for this
newsgroup.  If I recall correctly, the number was 62 --  
A width of 62 characters  would accommodate most reader
programs and not wrap.

 62? Even a simple DOS-box can do 80 and every newsreader I know can show
 at least 75...

My Free Agent is on 76 and noone's ever complained - but cbfd did when I had
it on 78 ... it's a fine line :o)

OK-  my faux pas--  I looked up the info
in www.dejanews.. The topic was discussed in March
of 1997 and was titled "Linewrap and More".

The field data that I posted in my original article reflects these default
values, with the result that 75 characters does get linewrapped in some
cases, the reason for me to denote it not a safe width. Not enough field
data for 74 and 73 characters, and hence a grey area in my experience. And
finally, 72 characters is a safe width according to field data sofar.

The number is 72 --  not 62 as I mentioned.
However, I can tell you that my Juno email reader
does wrap at 65.  Go figure.

I use Free Agent, a small, but rather comfortable Windows 3.x freeware
newsreader available at www.forteinc.com.
Word wrap and line length can be set to your heart's desire. With a
1024x768 resolution and Courier New 8 pt as display font I get 142
characters/line. The only features I occasionally miss are the
handling of crossposted messages and proper display of HTML posts. But
you can always buy Agent, which includes full eMail functionality,
kill files, folders, and so on...
