Dear Nic,

    Any idiot can make asky art pichers. If you doan believe me, try
e-mailing a few of the reg'ler posters fer a while. You will be sur-prised
how many is actual ijiots. I reckon I wood suggest you do this: find
some kinder picher you like, and look at it. See how it are made. Then try
to make one kinder like it, your own se'f. Ere try to make one sorter like
it. You might also want to look at makin' sum small stuff. Look:

             \  <--- this is a slash-stroke

              \, <--- now it's one with ah ol' comma attached

            \,/ <--- now it are a bird (if you use a bit of imagination)

Look how I make this here easy dawg:

            //  <--- more slashes

           //\\\ <--- a lot more

           //\\\
          //o o\\  <--- o's make good eyes

         //\\\
        //o o\\
        /=(o)=\
        ///U\\\ <--- now it are a dawg face

            //\\\
           //o o\\
           /=(o)=\
           ///U\\\     <--- and a whole dawg
           \\\\///
           /// \\\
           \\\ ///
           (_) (_)

       See, it din't take much, acutally.

       Try some things like houses, which are easy to outline.

                /\ <--- apex of ah ol' roof

               /\
              /==\
             /____\ <--- whole roof (I hate roofin', doan you?)

              /\
             /==\
            /____\
            | __ | <--- not much of ah house, but that oughter
            |_||_| be enuff to show you how easy it are.

          A simple tree:

                  /\ <--- same kinder thang as above

                /\
               //\\ <--- it grew into ol' pine tree
                ||

       You kin do this here asky thang, if'n you wants to. It doan take
much practisin', and you doan even haff to be ah ijiot to do it.

                              Good luck,
                                JRO

Welcome to a-a-a...
Have you read the newsgroup's FAQ?
Have you read any of the tutorials?
Can you show us some of your attempts at ASCII art?

My suggestions to budding ASCII artists
are the following:

                   -- look at as many ASCII pictures that you can
                    -- identify how the characters are used in those pictures
                    -- duplicate an "already-made" picture -
                    - copy it line by line or section by section
                    -- modify an existing picture
                    -- start small- perhaps doodle and see what it looks like,

                     and go from there
                     --use a model or picture as a guideline
                    -- read the tutorials and the FAQ
                    -- post your pictures for critique (or send them to a
friend for critique)
                    -- keep at it and have fun... <--- most important!

And be forewarned-- it is addicting! :)

1. Read the FAQ:

   http://studserv.stud.uni-hannover.de/~freise/ascii/faq.html

2. Try pictures with lots of straight lines first (rounded shapes are
more difficult to make).

For example: small trains, houses, your computer, a floor plan of your
house or apartment, ...

Here are some straight lines:

     3/1    2/1     1/1     2/3     1/2
|    |      /      /      .'      .'
|    |     |      /      /      .'
|    /     /     /     .'     .'          1/3
|   |     |     /     /     .'         .-'
|   |     /    /    .'    .'        .-'
|   /    |    /    /    .'       .-'       1/4
|  |     /   /   .'   .'      .-'      _.-'
|  |    |   /   /   .'     .-'     _.-'      1/5
|  /    /  /  .'  .'    .-'    _.-'     _.--'
| |    |  /  /  .'   .-'   _.-'    _.--'      1/6
| |    / / .' .'  .-'  _.-'   _.--'     __.--'     1/7
| |   | / / .' .-' _.-'  _.--'    __.--'    __..--'
              _.-'  _.--'   __.--'   __..--'    1/8
               _.--'  __.--'  __..--'   __..--''
                __.--' __..--'  __..--''
                __..--' __..--''
                __..--''
               -------------------------- 0

(ok, they're not quite "straight", but they're about as close as you can
get with ascii characters)

3. You can also have lots of fun with Figlet:
