   You can read articles that you've already read, as long as they are
still on the news spool at your site. If you are on a Unix based system,
using rn or trn (preferably trn), do the following:

   o Type a copital U (a lower case u will unsubscribe you from that group)

   o Wait for the next prompt, and type a lower case a

   o Wait for the next prompt, and type a lower case q

   I did it in trn to rec.arts.ascii, and it looked like this:

======  91 unread articles in rec.arts.ascii -- read now? [+ynq] U
Getting overview file..
Set unread: +select or all? [+an] a

End of newsgroup rec.arts.ascii. (132 articles still unread)

What next? [npq] q

   Maybe some other folks can tell how to read already read news for
other readers and systems. I believe this is important, but that many
people do not know how to do it. And they ask for reposts because they
skipped over an article, and don't know they can read it again.

to read articles you've already read in tin just press 'r' which toggles
read/unread on and off.

A (possible) universal solution would be to edit your .newsrc file.

Example:
rec.arts.ascii: 1-11432 <=- simply change the last number (which indicates
                            high number read)

I tend to scan through groups quickly, see a few interesting replies, and
then realize I missed the original. I use TRN, so your hint might come in
handy now.

   Here's another one on this topic that was sent to me and not the
groups. This one is from Adrian Graham DENT:

For a Trumpet (at least I think that is what this is) newsreader, simply
type "Alt G "(gor group) which pops up a littl e"group" menu, then
sellect "u" for "unread all" or "1" or "2" for unread ten and unread 20
respectively.
Adrian.
(and after using trumpet, I find rn difficult to use.)

> Maybe some other folks can tell how to read already read news for

Well, you see, each newsreader has a record file where it saves the changes you made to the news
system by reading it. For 'nn' it is called ".newsrc" (for rn also, don't know about other).

Below is an example of a part of this file (ofcourse ascii art)

alt.binaries.pictures.ascii: 1-273
alt.binaries.pictures.d! 1-624

A ":" after the group is 'subscribed' and a "!" is 'unsubscribed' to a group. The numbers give the
article numbers that have been read.

If you want to re-read the alt.--.ascii group again, just edit your .newsrc file and throw away
the 1-273. If you want to (re-)subscribe to a group, change the "!" into ":" and V.V. if you want
to unsubscribe it

So no UI or whatever, just see all the possible groups in the editor.

Happy hacking,

I read my news using trn... so this is for trn users...

In such cases when I accidentally skipped over a news and have already
skip the newsgroup; in which case the news has been deleted ; I will
immediately give the command "SHIFT a" at the line where the newsgroup
is written that I wish to preserved to the original state. This is done at
the first level of entrance in trn(where you can find the listing of the
newsgroups- not where there is a listing of topics for that particular
newsgroup)
eg.
==== 13 unread articles in alt.sports.baseball.atlanta-braves --read now?[+ynq]
==== 8 unread articles in comp.mail.mush -- read now?[+ynq]SHIFT a
                                                          ~~~~~~~~
I make it a habit to do this after I quit reading any newsgroup so that
if I want to read it again when I enter trn (if its still in the pool)
it will still be there.
Sometimes I just fiddle  the list in the .newsrc file - and I change the
numbers written after the name of the newsgroup.
eg -use vi or joe to enter the .newsrc file
.newsrc
alt.sports.baseball.atlanta-braves: 1-1889
comp.mail.mush: 1 - 1386
                    ~~~~
I don't know exactly how to determine the correct # to put... but I use
the trial and error method. So far my fiddling hasn't done any harm. I'll
just enter trn after every changes I make to see if my desired news
is back, if not I'll change the numbers some more until i get what i want.
(Sometimes I have to make a few changes before I get the news back)
USE THIS METHOD AT YOUR OWN RISK. JUST REMEMBER to make a backup of your
.newsrc file b4 you try to do anything. If anything should go wrong you
could just replace the file that you've screwed up with the backup file.

...AND another thing...
you could modify the .newsrc file to place your favorite newsgroup at the
top of you newsgroup list. Just move the line containing your the desired
newsgroup to the top of the list. Or you can use the hard way ;) and type
it.
you can also unsuscribe a newsgroup by deleting the line containing the
newsgroup name.
you can un-unsuscribe a newsgroup by changing ! to :
eg
   comp.mail.mush! 1 - 1386 to  comp.mail.mush: 1-1386
                 ~                            ~
you can also suscribe any newsgroup that is in the news pool at your site
by writing down the full name of the news group and (yes) the numbers.

Why don't you just modify you .newsrc file??

   It's faster than going to your .newsrc and diddling it, and going
back. Once you learn to do it, it's very quick.
