Probably two shade bobs, blending together, so I'd need three subtly changing colours, where the third is a blend between the other two. Might work, although changing the preset palette is kind of screwy in text mode for some reason. Plotting the bobs is no problem though; text mode graphics memory starts at B800:0000, start plottin'! I was just thinking that this kind of blending would make a good JavE feature. I hope some good shading tools emerge in the next JavE version. I can think of blending , darken , lighten , subtracting. Use Control-K and letter P to turn color off making a tranaparent effect. Use Control-K number to turn it back on. This applies to IRC. The only way to avoid using an alpha channel (that I know of) is to make with that low level code and draw say, only every second pixel of the relevant object. Blending is not available at all to individual members of the ASCII character set. (Read the standard.) Some implementation may add effects to text, but that is not specified by the ASCII character set itself. An alpha channel can provide transparency or translucency, but there are other techniques which don't use an alpha channel (such as a colour key) which only provide transparency. Unless they're using a different background colour like me. My new
monitor doesn't go dark enough so I use a grey background.

But if you use Control-k 0,0 and someone uses a dark background for viewing, they see blobs of white. Which really sucks. Thats why i use Control-O to shut color off.
