Just something I've noticed, a couple of days ago as some of you know I
posted my first ASCII art as sigs. Since then I've being looking up
artists work. On this ng people prefer the /| approach which gives the
image a kinda 2D effect. However when I searched the net I found loadsa
nude girls (no complaints ;o) ) which were shaded and everything to
attempt to create a 3D effect.

On this ng you don't give these people any credit or you never see them
posted, where as you see the \|/ type drawings everywhere.
                            (o o)
                             ( )

Is the shaded more complex ASCII art pics not appreciated here, is it
like the script kiddies of ASCII? Please help, As I don't know how to
draw to get respect on this NG

hi Jay..

Rowan Crawford sums it up pretty well here
http://munkora.cs.mu.oz.au/~chesson/ascii/technique/index.html noting there
are all different kinds of styles. All styles are appreciated and admired,
the lovely nude ladies more so Im sure for some people :)

(Is 'flower' a credit or a description?)

This sort of 3D ASCII (the latter example) is just as welcome on the group.
Conversions, however, have caused arguments about how to credit them and

graphic)

Basically, if it's a picture in ascii that you made yourself (or almost
yourself - you can use conversions as a base for a pic) then it's welcome
here :o)

More info is in the FAQ list:

Well, most of the shaded ASCII pics are
created via use of conversion software.
There isn't much to clicking a button and
having your 'puter spit out an ASCII pic.
Usually the results need some manual
tweaks so that they look decent. We've
talked about adding credit to such pictures...
There's been some debate as to whether
or not it ought to be considered "art" --
and/or if the picture is generated by specialized
software, it is a creation of the person who
pushed the image through the process? or
is it a creation of the person who developed
the software? or is it a creation of the person
who made the original gif/jpg image??
The simple answer is to not credit it at all...
Make sense?

Don't mistake me though.. there are some
people who create the solid style without
using conversion software. The Dutch Dude
is one. Susie Oviatt is another. However
the majority of the nudie pics are conversions.

Well, the picture I have could feasibly be a conversion from Theo's pic to a
graphic (using a program like ASC2PIC, but not it since the outputs from
that have a distinct look about them) but since the picture I have is very
high quality I think it is unlikely.
I might put the picture up on one of my sites later - I'll see if I can find
it, since it's on one of my many iOmegaZIP Disks.

Hi, It's Me again Dutch Dude Theo!

How are you all doing?
For those who know me, I'm sory to say I havn't
had a chance of doing a lot of Ascii Art lately
because of a change in carreer.
To answer Martin Atkins question,
Non of my work is done from gif conversions.
However I do work from a drawing, just to have
some reference of what I'm doing.
Some times that drawing is based on a picture,
but mostly it ain't.

Keep drawing,

Hi There Folks!, It's me Dutch Dude Theo again.
Hello Joan/Martin

For those who do remember me let me tell you,
non of my art was done from gif conversions.
However I do work from a drawing, just to have some
reference of what I'm doing.
Sometime that drawing is based on a picture but mostly it ain't.
I'm sorry to say, because of a career change I don't
do much Ascii Art lately. However I'm still drawing,
that never has stopped and I suppose that will never end!! ;-)

Keep on drawing!

I wish Theo were still around... are his pics
conversions? I really didn't think so... some
of the perspectives are just a bit off (not
much) but enough to make me think that
they were not.

There has been said enough about those girls but ...

... it is true that the fashion here in a.a-a is clearly on outline
pictures. There are probably many different reasons for that but
it's certainly not because we don't appreciate big shaded
pics. Big (well done) solids are thought to be the most
difficult next to very small outline pictures.

Talking about getting respect : since we got millions of outlines
now you'll stick out easily with a good solid.

And as an example that solids sometimes show up in a.a-a I repost

I'd suppose most of those artists here who've drawn more than a few dozen
pictures have at least one among them that could be described as "solid".
The line between the two styles can get rather blurred, though. Would you
say the mushrooms below are solid-style? Both of them? Just one? Neither?

I would say that the mushroom on the left
is line style.. or outline style. The one on
the right is mostly line-style as well...
but you have used some solid-style elements... namely the lettering for
shading.
I suppose you could alter the pic to have
them spell something out...
