How to batch process ascii art images ?

Hi everybody ..

I'm looking for a way to batch convert images into ascii files in order 
to produce ascii anims.

I've found many websites providing high quality converters for singles 
images ... and I'm trying to get command line softwares allowing to 
process multiple files through a script.

I use cygwin

I was planning to use ImageMagick to convert image into a PxM format .. 
and then use aview to convert this PxM image into an ascii file ..

But the problem is that aview doesn't give me hand back after execution 
.. (should I use expect to batch command it .. and then how to record 
result into a file?)

Moreover .. I find aview output ugly compared to web converters (for 
instance white areas are filled with "@" intead of space as web 
converter usually do).

Is there an option to ask aview to ouput white areas as space ?

Is there a better software to do what I want to do ?

I heard about "mplayer -vo aa " .. but aalib doesn't work with mplayer 
on my XP system .. and I don't know how to get them working together ..:(

I'm using v6.0 milestone 7 but only see version 5 on Markus' site.

Here's his last milestone announcement from Google

Markus refers to 6.0 as a Developers Version, which I assume to mean
it's a Beta.  I've never had any problems with v6.0m7 on my computer..
though I've never used the batch conversion feature either.
