Question: Where can I fond irregular ascii characters?

Can anyone tell me where I could find characters suucch as an "a" with an
accent mark or an "n" with a tilde?  Any of the odd ascii characters for
unix?  Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

You really need to read the iso_8859_1 faq.

In there you'll find this:

ISO_8859-1_National_Character_Set_FAQ 

It should answer this question for you.

Specifically (if I remember correctly), there is a section about
using COUNTRY.SYS in dos to get this going for you.

If you are on a unix system, then do this in your ~/.login file:

setenv LANGC
setenv LC_TYPE iso_8859_1

As far as I know those characters belong to the upper 128 characters in
the 8 bit ASCII-set. That's why there are problems if you transfer
files containing such characters (internet provides only the 7 bit ASCII
standard), so it is better not to use such characters.
BTW: I have the same problems with the german "Umlaute". If I use them
in a mail (I am working on a Unix-Station), my friends cannot read them
(they work on PCs), so I don't use them.
