Dictionary gives: cajole, swindle, waste time, dawdle...., or (in
Scotland, where I am), mouth music

I always assumed that the diddle as used here was slang, probably
derived from the term "doodle" ie casual scribbling of pictures

I can remember ABBA sang "dumn,dumn,diddle to be your fiddle"
or something in these days. Maybe 70's?
So I thought "diddle" means "to move arm like playing violin".
Just similar action to use a eraser.
