simple question: frame shutter esc.sequence for vt100/X-term

simple question: frame shutter esc.sequence for vt100/X-term?

Hi ascii animation pro's,

I'm currently trying to create a fluid dynamics computer code
that relies on ascii graphics for input as well as output. The
goal is to create the most easy-to-handle, silliest, inaccurate,
fascinating and portable computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code
ever.

Now, the official version must use "dumb" ascii graphics, merely
dumping each new picture (snapshot) line-by-line to the terminal,
but for personal use I'd like to enhance the code so that it
erases the screen + puts the cursor at the "home" position in
before dumping the next picture. That is, I want to get rid of
the "shutterless" appearance the film will have when each new picture
has to push the old picture off the top. Also, such an escape
sequence enhanced output will be possible to pipe into a file, which
can be saved for later viewing (cat'ing) on the screen.

So, my question is, what escape sequences do I have to send to a
vt100 and/or X-terminal in order to wipe the screen and start at
the top?

Thanks a bundle in advance!

p.s. Of course I will notify this group when the code is finished.
(If ever. This code has existed as an exciting idea in my mind for
quite a while now. It was only recently I managed to figure out how
I should do it to get away from those pesky data structures,
equation solvers, etc that usually sits inside CFD codes.)

In article <341...@na.chalmers.se>, Johannes Schoon

I don't know if it will be the same for you on a unix system
but on Dos, to put the cursor to the "home" position you can
use the ansi escape sequence:
        escape left_square_bracket semi_colon capital_H
ascii codes (in decimal): 027 091 059 072
[note for Dos ppl: you need to have ansi.sys loaded to do this]

Then you can just overwrite the last frame, as long as you write
the same number of lines and chars per line.

The problem with this is that you can't control the speed of
playback (AFAIK). When I tried it I couldn't see anything except
the last frame because it was too fast.

I think you would be better off saving the plain output and
converting it to html/javascript like the animations in this ng.
Kangaroo, who posts here, has written a program to convert from
plain text to the html/javascript format. You'll find a link to
it at http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/4942
