I have been following the "cool font" discussions with interest and a
thought just occurred to me.  A source font was taken, a word was typed in
this font, and then the font was converted to a GIF image.  The GIF image
was then converted to ascii.  Well, are there any raster plotters that
TROFF uses that plot out a straight bit map?  Why couldn't a pixel ON/OFF
bitmap for TROFF be converted straight into a "banner" like figlet looking
font by replacing 0's with spaces and 1's will a fill character such as
'#', '$', '%', '*', etc.  It would be nice if the system libraries already
online could be used to generate ASCII text.  If there is a raster anywhere
in the output, why couldn't a program grab it and convert it to an ASCII
shape ?  Something to think about, anyway....
