                                             text is entirely

I've noticed a lot of people replying at the bottom of the messages
(under the art). Is this something I'm supposed to do that I missed
when I read the FAQ?

I am not sure if you mean i do,or dont snip the messages properly.
Recently i have let some messages grow in order to preserve some
continuity for educational reasons, and because its also very cute.

for the most part i think i snip then down pretty good....so i am

Yes, and sometimes I appreciate folks who leave most of the original post
in their repost. I don't always get the original on my news server. It is
like insurance, and so very nice and considerate of my special freinds, who
remember to do this! :) :) :)

Okay, well when I'm making a general reply, I've always replied to the
top and I've seen most people do it until I came to this newsgroup

I have Netscape 4.06 but I'm not going to bother with the default cos
it'd be easier just to set where I want to reply.

Well, I guess we are all different in our own, special ways. Personally,
I think making a post is * JUST * like talking to your friends. I would
_never_ interrupt my friends, so I always put what I have to say,-->after<--
what they have alread said. I ***--> always <--*** want to look polite. :)

[It's nice to insert a blank line between the quoted text and your own
text. It's easier to read that way.]

>
> Okay, well when I'm making a general reply, I've always replied to the
> top and I've seen most people do it until I came to this newsgroup

The traditional way to do it is to put the new text _after_ the quoted
text. I see a lot of newbies putting their own text at the top and find
it quite annoying. I've seen people in other groups complain about it
too and one of the best comments is: "This is Usenet, not Jeopardy!"

[And then you should "snip" parts of a message you are not replying to,
_and the sig_!]

Some ways to identify a newbie:

* Posts messages in "HTML".
* Puts the new text at the top.
* Quotes _everything_, including the sig.
* Asks FAQs.
* Gives incorrect answers to FAQs or posts things the group has
already seen a hundred times (Meriday....).

Some simple ways to give a good impression:

* Don't do any of the newbie things mentioned above.
* If you are completely new to a group, say so, and mention that
you have read the FAQ (which you have done, right?). Being new
is in itself not a bad thing, as long as you show some ambition
to fix that (asking about quoting as you did, rather than wait
until you get flamed for it, was the right thing to do). :-)
* I know spelling and grammar doesn't come as easily to everybody
but this is a text-only (well, this newsgroup is an exception!)
medium and such things do affect the way people think of you.

No, it's just common sense. It makes sense for people to read the bits
you're replying to, before they read your replies to them -- just like
an ordinary conversation. This matters particularly if you're replying
to several different bits of a message.

It also encourages people to snip the bits which they're not replying
to, rather than leaving an ever-expanding `Original Message:' section
underneath. (Unfortunately, quite a few of the regulars in this group
still don't do this. Here's looking at you, Krogg.)

Most newsreaders have an option to automatically place the cursor either
above or below the quoted text when replying -- the well-designed ones
default to below.
