another silly newbie question......

I have been fascinated by ascii art recently and enjoy reading and looking
at all the wonderful posts. My question is some of the rather large scenes
look garbled to me. Is there some other way I would be able to view these
outside of Outlook Express or is it a simple thing to do in the mail
program? Thanks in advance,

It's possible that your newsreader is set
to wrap at a width smaller than the large
ASCII art scene.  -- or it could be possible
that the picture is very wide.  Most people
keep the ASCII pics to 72-80 characters
max... but not always.

I view the larger pics by copy/pasting into
notepad.  Sometimes there might be little
'fixes' that are needed to bring the lines
back to together... ie. adding a 'return'

I think you are replying to the wrong question here.    :)

The solution has to do with word wrap, not fonts.

First, the sender must know the limitations and settings of his news
reader, to avoid sending wrapped text when a picture is wide (testing to
learn how that works is better to do in alt.test than here).

Then the reader must know the limitations and settings of his news
reader, and learn how to turn off automatic wrapping to view wide images
(if the image is wrapped already at the sending end it won't matter if
you view it correctly, it will still be messed up).


[It's also just a little bit confusing the way you put the quoted text
in your sig, without any  >  characters in front of it...]

Good suggestions by everyone else, and I am going to add this one:  that you
could reduce the font size in Outlook Express.  From what I remember, the
default size is a little large, 'smaller' is a good choice.

Hi.

There are two things you can do to view the ASCII properly. Both are equally
simple Change your mail client's default plain text font to a fixed width
font (System or Courier New, etc.).

Until you figure out how to do this, you can use the other method. Select
the contents of the message, copy them and paste them into Notepad or a
similar text editor.

If the garbling is caused by your Outlook Express rather than the newsreader
of the poster, you should be able to see the message properly by
Right-clicking on the message in the message list, choosing properties, then
on the Details tab, pressing 'Message Source'. A window should pop up
containing the original message before Outlook Express touched it...

Well, I know it works for email... I can't be so sure about newsgroups since
I read news in Free Agent rather than Outlook Express.

Exp. and I see all but the biggest pictures. Those I use notepad for or look
it up on dejanews. They use a tiny font!! :) Thanks again,
