I can't draw IRL, do I even stand a chance drawing in ASCII? BTW: I got
the pic below from a friend that thought it was cool....

Well, you ought to give it a try on your own... not just copying pics
that other people have made. There are several tutorials and
FAQ's available. Read them-- they are posted here regularly.
The Cheshire smile cowboy was made by me (the face) and
Colin Douthwaite (the hat and body)... Colin put it together.
Your friend may not have had initials/signatures with the
pic when he passed it along. It is common courtesy to leave
them on and give credit to the creators. ASCII art does
follow internet copyright laws and you should respect that.

I actually thought that the hat and bodywork was possibly good enough to claim the entire picture despite the pirated cheesy grin which did indeed come from your Cheshire Cat...but greatly wasted if just left on a cat! On the other hand _now_ I might just get all huffy and upset myself and decide to compose a new face to add to the body...trouble is I think I snaffled the boots from somewhere too. I've just rediddled them BTW. In fact, on reflection, perhaps only the tall white hat, tie and the belt are original. It's my opinion, and I believe the opinion of others in this group, that if you use the ASCII art created by others, you should give them credit. If you alter the pic in a minor way, (change a handful of characters), the signature should not be changed... if you change the picture (add to), then add your initials to the original signature for shared credit. If you completely change a picture so that it isn't even recognizable as the original (so as to even 'fool' the original artist), then I think it's permissible to use your own signature. I'm talking 'major' changes here. In your example, the face is clearly the same as my Cheshire cat.. I don't mind you using it, but don't claim it as your own. I know in your original postings, you've written "after jgs"-- that's fine... I'm not trying to be petty. Agreed, but I'm considering stopping diddling altogether and posting only my own original material ( if that is truly possible ). Pictures in my collection that I have already diddled I will probably retain and sometimes repost. I get throroughly tired of trying always to remember where I have got the elements included in my pictures and having to worry about how to append the credits to everything I post especially when a number of items from different people are included in a composite diddle. I have also long been weary of adding credits to pictures that even the authors themselves don't bother to sign. Actually I did not vote or even comment very much on the "art- crediting guidelines" when they were being proposed, discussed, and drafted because I felt that although they might be emininently desirable they were far too tricky to apply in daily practice to make them really effective. It still comes down to posters making known their displeasure if someone is stepping outside the guidelines. Now...few people seem to bother snaffling my wonderful pictures... I wonder why? *8-) Bye,
