I could make those, they are not illusions.

First one: rectangle box with two sides removed.
Second one: Two flat triangles at the ends of a board.

         ___ ____

Anyway, I think you get the idea.

If somebody with a digital camera wants to make one, please do!

No, sorry I don't.

There are two different kinds of illusions. First :
    __________________
   /_________________()
   | ________________
   |  | |____________()
   | |/______________
   |_________________() Unknown artist

The illusion in it comes from the simple fact that
the surfaces are not closed, ie are not surfaces.

Second :

           _____
          / /\
         / / \
        / / \
       / / /\ \
      / / / \ \
     / / /\ \ \
    / / / \ \ \
   / /__/____\ \ \
  / \ \ \
 /________________\ \ \
 \_____________________\ / Jugg and Grim

This actually can be 'build', cause it is only an illusion
if it's meant to be 3D. But even in 3D you can build it that
seen only from one angle it looks like that.

Still I'd call the 'impossible' triangle an illusion
because it suggests an impossible object. But that also
counts for the above pictures by PS.

(And for those who haven't seen the 'impossible' triangle
in reality, I've a picture attached which shows the idea.)

I hope you get the point.

If I had any way of getting images into my computer, I'd put a
model online so everybody can see how it's made.

Make your own:

Take a closed rectangle box

Cut out two long sides that are next to each other.

At a certian camera angle, the image will look like the one shown.

There! Now you see what I mean.

At an angle looking stright at the corner will make the lines line up.

Would SOMEBODY PLEASE make one, and post it.
I know somebody here has a digital camera, since you posted the images
of the 'blocks' that you used on the semi-impossible triangle!

Here's how to make it:

Get a box:
  ____________
 / /|
/___________/ |
| | |
| | /
|___________|/

Remove the labled sides:

  ____________
 / XXXXXXXX /|
/___________/ |
| | |
| XXXXXXXX | /
|___________|/

You will then have:

  ____________
 /| /|
/ | / |
| |_________| |
| / | /
|/__________|/

With lines to show sides:

  ____________
 /| | | | | |/|
/|| | | | | /||
|||_|_|_|_|_|||
||/ / / / / ||/
|/_/_/_/_/_/|/

Hmm, that made it harder, didn't it. :-)

    ____________
   /| | | | | |/|
 1/|| | | | | /||
  |||_|_|2|_|_|||
  ||/ / / / / ||/
  |/_/_/_/_/_/|/

If that box were viewd from an angle that made point 1 line up with
point 2, it would make the image.

Would the person who did the impossible cubes pictures please do
that and post it? Who was that?.?.?. Ah, Veronica Karlsson did
it! Veronica..........................

Actually, hmm...

Looking again, you may need to scrunch the box a little to make it
look EXACTLEY like the first image, but it is still possible.

Hmm....

Well, it doesn't look very good, but it gets the point across.

The added 3D info shows the brain how to handle it properly.

Many illusions fail to trick when a 3D version is shown.

I have done 3D design as well as many 'escher' pictures, and a little
flag pops up in my brain whenever I see these, and how it is made or
why it can't be made pops right up next. :-)

:) Well, size doesn't matter. Since you did not
answer the rest of my post, I take these pictures
to explain - again - what I mean.

1. Part
My brain for example ccould see this as a solid
bar seen from down under.

                               ______________
                            .'| |
                          .' | |
                        .' | |
                      .' | front |
                    .' | |
                  .' | |
                .' |______________|
              .' side .' .'
            .' .' bottom .'
          .' .' .'
        .' .' .'

2.part : Solid bar seen from above

                          1*
        .' .' .'
      .' .' .'
    .' top .' .'
  .' .' .'
.'_____________.' side .'
| | .'
| | .'
| | .'
| front | .'
| | .'
| | .'
|______________|.'

Add those together and it's 'impossible'. You might
say that this is not what you see but - funny as it
is - that's what I first saw in PS's pictures.

While you assumed line 1* is hidden behind the front
plate and connected to the lower left corner, my eyes
would like to see it connected to the upper right.

> I hope you get the point.
[snip]
> At a certian camera angle, the image will look like the one shown.

Yes, I get your point. Nobody seems to get mine.
Anyway, last try :
/|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/
/|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/
/|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/
/|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/
/|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/
/|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/
/|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/
/|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/
/|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ \|\ /|/ (PS)

This is also an illusion and I hope we don't need cameras or
boxes to prove it. But there's nothing wrong with it, only
that it provides a picture our brains cannot hangle properly.
That what it is all about. At least my brain does the same
with this
           ____

No! I already have 450 bun forms from last time that I'll never use...

but here's my interpretation of the triangle one... (and yes, you can
use this "solution" for the rectangle as well)

http://www.ludd.luth.se/users/vk/pics/ascii/garbage_heap/quite_possible1.gif
http://www.ludd.luth.se/users/vk/pics/ascii/garbage_heap/quite_possible2.gif
http://www.ludd.luth.se/users/vk/pics/ascii/garbage_heap/quite_possible3.gif

Note: this is NOT supposed to "look impossible" (somebody got confused
about this last time), this is supposed to look quite _possible_!

(adding the ascii we're talking about)
         ___ ____
      .'| | .'\ /
    .' |___| .' \/

|___|.' /__\.' (PS)

OK, thanx Veronica. I agree that those objects are possible.
(I always did by the way).
Look at the thread and see 'simply illusions' there. Your
pictures are damn good examples how an illusuon works. When
looking at
> http://www.ludd.luth.se/users/vk/pics/ascii/garbage_heap/quite_possible1.gif
you can't tell that this object is circular. You have to see it
from a different angle to do that. The 3D shape appeares as a
surprise (well, for some).

NOTE : This so-called impossible triangle
           _____
          / /\
         / / \
        / / \

  / \ \ \

is also very possible but at the same time is an accepted member of the
'illusions' family. Why (still) people tend to confuse 'impossible
object' with 'illusion'.

> Note: this is NOT supposed to "look impossible" (somebody got confused

:)
Well that was me, though I don't call it 'confused'.
But this is a different subject ...

I've been thinking for around two years about this one, and I think it is
a semi-possibility...

Here are the steps for making it:

1. Take a piece of flexible material in the shape of a triangular prism:

  +------ must be equilateral!
  V
   _______.___________________________________________________________
  /\     /|\                        <--- about 30cm --->              \
 / \ | about 3cm \
/____\___\|/____________________________________________________________\
          "

2. Take one end, twist it through 120 degrees, and stick it to the other
end (making a circle when viewed from above)

(I tried this in ascii. I didn't manage it :) )

3. Stretch the loop over 3 nails, arranged at the points of an equilateral
triangle:

                                    O

                                 / \

                               / \

                             / \

                           / \

                         O <-- about 9.5cm --> O

4. Fiddle with it until it looks like the diagram at the top of this
message...

Nice diagram you have there, but the figure itself is truely impossible.
Look at the base of the triangle.
The left side is going away into the distance, and the right side is moving
forwards, yet they both meet together even though they start from the same
plane.

Also, <grin> If it was indeed possible to be made from one joined piece then
people would have been selling it as a curiosity.

Would it make things easier for you if we broke the picture up into cubes?

Who was it who posted a GIF of how they make these?

I know it is done with a shape that is not closed, and it only
appears closed from a certian angle.

I'm gonna have to agree, it is impossible, unless you figure out some
way to warp space/time....

btw, i've seen this big one and I think it makes it even more clear that
objects don't act this way in real space.

I've seen illusions where it looks like it is real, but one side comes
toward the viewer, and the other goes away, but they line up just right
when viewed from the front. There are pictures on a web site somewhere
where people have made them, and take pictures from the front, then show
how they did it from the side. i don't remember where it was, but i
think i searched altavista.digital.com with "impossible object"

also i have a nice little one in my sig...

One of the best sites on the impossible triangle I've found! C:

about, but your's does a very good job!

But it's all possible! C: Version ~3 will have options for
fourth-dimensional mazes! Let's see you figure that out! :-)

Yep.

Also add 3D artists to that list. (me. :-)

After dealing with 3D images and drawing them, writing VRML, writing
3D generators, drawing illusions, etc, your brain gets used to the
fact that the rules can be tricked, and double checks when a
questionable image is presented.

I've got some more illusions coming, so watch out! (in a couple weeks,
right now I hardley have any free time. )-:
