First : __________________ /_________________() | ________________ | | |____________() | |/______________ |_________________() Unknown artist The illusion in it comes from the simple fact that the surfaces are not closed, ie are not surfaces. Second : _____ / /\ / / \ / / \ / / /\ \ / / / \ \ / / /\ \ \ / / / \ \ \ / /__/____\ \ \ / \ \ \ /________________\ \ \ \_____________________\ / Jugg and Grim This actually can be 'build', cause it is only an illusion if it's meant to be 3D. But even in 3D you can build it that seen only from one angle it looks like that. Still I'd call the 'impossible' triangle an illusion because it suggests an impossible object. But that also counts for the above pictures by PS. (PS) OK, thanx Veronica. I agree that those objects are possible. (I always did by the way). Look at the thread and see 'simply illusions' there. Your pictures are damn good examples how an illusuon works. When looking at > http://www.ludd.luth.se/users/vk/pics/ascii/garbage_heap/quite_possible1.gif you can't tell that this object is circular. You have to see it from a different angle to do that. The 3D shape appeares as a surprise (well, for some). NOTE : This so-called impossible triangle _____ / /\ / / \ / / \ / / /\ \ / / / \ \ / / /\ \ \ / / / \ \ \ / /__/____\ \ \ / \ \ \ /________________\ \ \ \_____________________\ / Jugg and Grim is also very possible but at the same time is an accepted member of the 'illusions' family. Nice diagram you have there, but the figure itself is truely impossible. Look at the base of the triangle. The left side is going away into the distance, and the right side is moving forwards, yet they both meet together even though they start from the same plane. Also, <grin> If it was indeed possible to be made from one joined piece then people would have been selling it as a curiosity. Paul Wilkins

I'm gonna have to agree, it is impossible, unless you figure out some
way to warp space/time....
btw, i've seen this big one and I think it makes it even more clear that
objects don't act this way in real space.

I've seen illusions where it looks like it is real, but one side comes
toward the viewer, and the other goes away, but they line up just right
when viewed from the front. There are pictures on a web site somewhere
where people have made them, and take pictures from the front, then show
how they did it from the side. i don't remember where it was, but i
think i searched altavista.digital.com with "impossible object"
also i have a nice little one in my sig...

Yep. Also add 3D artists to that list. (me. :-) After dealing with 3D images and drawing them, writing VRML, writing 3D generators, drawing illusions, etc, your brain gets used to the fact that the rules can be tricked, and double checks when a questionable image is presented.
