Sorry, wrong newsgroup. Try one that deals with technical details for
your favourite OS instead.

Don't think this is the wrong ng. Did it occur to you that Aik wanted to get
the symbols she's asking for so as to draw ascii art more effectively?

There is a small program called Character Map for Win 95 and Win 3.1+.
You pick the font you want. It will show you all the charcaters
available, plus when you click the one you want the number you are
looking for will show up in the bottom right hand corner. The reason for
this program is that, not every font has the same special characters.
So, to know what you are looking for, get it. It is a very small program
and came on many MS Operating Systems.

*PLEASE NOTE These extra characters are not to be used in this
newsgroup. If you don't have this Windows program email me and I think I
can tell you where to get it at.

A little suggestion, read this document, especially part 1, "What is
ASCII art, and why do people use it?":

http://studserv.stud.uni-hannover.de/~freise/ascii/faq.html

Then come back and explain again, in detail, why you think the original
post belongs in this newsgroup.

Derek,

I'm sure someone will hammer you for saying that later. But if you have
to type alt+anything then you're not drawing ASCII art. In fact you're using a
set of characters which are specific to that operating system and are severely
limiting your viewing audience. (In this case, you'd be restricting it to
IBM-PC DOS users.)

For more details on what is and is not ASCII refer to the FAQ. It's
posted frequently, and is available in HTML form at

http://artpacks.acid.org/faqs/faq-altasciiart.html

All this person wanted was an answer to a question. Maybe I missed the
original post, but I didn't remember this person saying anything about
drawing ascii pics or even mentioning ascii art. He definitely came to
the right newsgroup, because we all know about them.

I'm really sorry if I made someone mad for helping this person out, but
it isn't a life or death question.

A great man(my Dad) once said, "Sometimes, it's OK for people to be
wrong."

Donovan

It comes with Windows 3.1 and upwards. If you can't find it it isn't
installed, dig out your original disks/cd-rom..

Except for the fact that these characters are NOT--
repeat NOT NOT NOT ASCII ! They are NOT
universal from one system to the next... that is the
most wonderful thing about ASCII art.

Veronica is correct--

Thanx!!

Every1 at alt.ascii-art : My humblest apologies for the mistake which I made
earlier in this thread. It was wrong of me to judge someone's (Veronica I
think) response to the question which started this all off. The reason
being, that, aside from the antagonistic way in which it was worded, I also
was not in a complete understanding of what ascii art truly is. I do know,
and my response seems downright stupid. Okay, this person was able to get
help here but certainlu even admited him/herself that ascii art was not why
they needed to know how to do the ALT+? character set.
I had no right to even interfere in this ng in general. I am someone who,
despite having subscribed, only dips into this ng every now and then. I
can't even draw ascii art myself. Anyway, in conclusion, apologies once more
and I'll only make another contribution to this site when I feel able to
achieve something other than an arguement.

					yours sincerely,

When you see the same question for the n'th time it is easy to get bored
with it...

A common mistake, and a good reason to point you (and any new lurkers
out there) in the direction of the FAQ, but I see you've got it now. :)

> Okay, this person was able to get
> help here but certainlu even admited him/herself that ascii art was not why

...and consequently that alt.ascii-art might not be the very best place
to ask about ALT+? characters...

You have the same right to interfere as the rest of us. It is however a
good idea to make sure one knows what one is talking about before one
opens one's mouth... FAQs exist for that purpose and can save you from
that kind of embarassment in the future. :)

Sounds normal :)

That's ok :)
