request please for an ascii drawing of a saddle and a huge ball that would fit into the saddle; for math

alt.ascii-art · 18 messages · 17 Jan 2007 - 25 Jan 2007
This is a ascii art for math and sci.math. Can someone please draw a
saddle and then draw a huge ball that
would sit on top of the saddle as to ride the saddle. The idea is that
the ball is Riem geom and the saddleshape
is Lobachevskian geom.

And, please, if you have extra time could you draw a Cartesian three
dimensional coordinate system of about
the same size as the saddle and ball.

Thanks so much.

What is a lobachevskian geom?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperbolic_geometry
Or a Reim geom?

This may not have occured to you but some people may have no idea what
a Cartesian three dimensional coordinate system is. They are even less
likely to know when you have abreviated something like Riem. Whenever
one group with its own language is making a request of a group that
has its own language it is best to provide a referance source to any
terms that group one may know but group two my have no experiance
with.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_coordinate_system
Now, which of systems listed there did you want illustrated?

How big did you want this thing? This big?

Size matters.

He probably means respectively hyperbolic and parabolic.

I hate it when people use the name of someone instead of a meaningful name
to designate a mathematical object.

I believe he wants something like that (sorry, this is not really ASCII-art;
but this is too hard for me):

camera { location <0.5, 0.5, -2> look_at <0, 0.1, 0> }
light_source { <10, 10, -20> rgb <2, 2, 2> }
quadric { <-1, 0, 1>, 0, <0, 1, 0>, 0
  clipped_by { box { <-0.7, -10, -0.7>, <0.7, 10, 0.7> } }
  pigment { rgb <1, 0, 0> }
  finish { ambient 0.2 specular 1 }
}
sphere { <0, 0.5, 0>, 0.5
  pigment { rgb <0, 1, 1> }
  finish { ambient 0.2 specular 1 }
}

The sphere has to be in the bottom of the saddle, and be as big as possible
to fit in the ridge. It is called the osculating sphere at this point.

Elliptic, not parabolic.

These names are traditional in some countries, like former USSR where
Lobachevsky is considered one of the greatest mathematicians ever.

Thanks that is good except I need the ball positioned in the center of
the dip.
Here is my 3-D Cartesian coordinate system

      |
      |  /
  _ _|/___  x-axis
     / |
   /   |

Now I need to try to put that ball in the center of the saddle dip.

                  __
                 (  )
                  \/  _
              / \`---' \
             /_.-\_.--._\

Can you draw this saddle such that the dip is about where -1 and -2 and
-3 is on the x-axis
and where the ball is positioned in the center of the dip of about +1
and +2 and +3 of the x-axis

Yes, it has to be ASCII. In terms of computers, AP is still in the
early 1990s. His mathematics is still in the 15th century: Texts with
long titles, informal proofs, and no symbolic formulas.

Is that the size and scale you need? If that is what you are looking
for then I can asciify it without a problem.

Yes, could you please try to duplicate the Kurtz picture as close
to possible in ascii.

A picture speaks a thousand words and makes science so
much more livelier.

The reason I need this is because the picture tells so much
easier that Euclidean 3-dimensional geometry is a composite of
a Sphere and a saddleshape. That when you add the two
you get 3-D Euclidean.

Come to think of it. A good computer engineer should be able to
construct software
such that you input a picture in one end and out the other end drops a
ascii art
match of that picture. Such a thing would be useful for storage space
in that
ascii would take up less storage. I would not be surprized that some
computer
engineer has already devised such a program. Sort of like a ascii
photocopier
where you put a photo in and out comes a ascii art picture.

It has already been done. JavE for example.
If someone wants to take a shot at asciifying this pic go head since I
probably won't get to it till Sunday.
