salvia is anything but lame. it in fact is(and I know this from
experience) hands down, the MOST powerful pyschedelic out there.  the
reason it is unscheduled is because it is in a different class of
hallucinogen than lsd or mushrooms.  as long it goes unabused it will
remain unscheduled.  it is not likely that it ever will be abused
because users tend to gravitate toward the plant more for spiritual
matters than for recreational use.

no free samples; but you can purchase easily and legally from many
online herb stores.  just search for salvia divinorum.  its not even
that expensive, considering you only need very low doses.  but you
must remember to use a bong or water pipe of some kind, also use a jet
flame lighter as you need a higher temperature to free the active
chemicals.
