Hi all,

This topic has been a curiosity to me for a very long time.
I've started compiling a list but it is currently incomplete.
Here's what I have so far:

     Symbol Proper Name Usually Called
     ------ -------------- -------------------------------------------
! Exclamation Mark, Ball bat, Bang
" Double Quotation Mark, Double Tick

        ) Parenthesis Right parenthesis
        *    Asterisk      Star, Splat
        + Plus sign

        - Hyphen Dash
        . Period Period, Dot
        / Virgule Slash

        ? Question mark Question mark
        @ At sign
        [ Left square bracket
        \ Back slash
        ] Right square bracket
        ^ Circumflex Carat, Hat
        _ Underscore Underbar, Underline
` Grave accent Back quote, Back tick
{ Left curly bracket, Left brace
        | Vertical bar, Pipe, Or sign
} Right curly bracket, Right brace
        ~ Tilde Squiggly

I heard the octothorp described by a NASA engineer in a class
I was teaching several years ago. "Rocket scientists" are always
right, aren't they? :-) Can anyone fill in the blanks or con-
     tribute more?
