ASCII Art Fart for Tue, 2007 Jan 9: #2756 VIKING

When I started seeing headlines like 'NASA may have killed Martians" I
skipped right by them and didn't even read the story.  I couldn't
bring myself to hear even one more time about how the guy who
developed the life tests for the Viking craft was convinced that the
experiments came back with positive results but NASA was to
incompetent to see that and I could tell that these headlines were yet
another in a long 30 year line of attempts by this guy to have his
name vindicated.  He is kind of like a troll on Usenet, he just keeps
coming even though no one wants to hear what he says because he is
full of it and 'it' starts with a capital 'S'.  About a week later I
got confirmation that my first hunch was right.  I don't normally
avoid news stories and I almost never ignore science stories but once
in a while a headline comes by that is so loaded with baggage that I
have to pass it by and this was it.

Ok that rant went on a little longer than I had planned. 
...  Hmm.. maybe after a few edits I should include that in my Glitchs
and Geeks geekcast.

I'm always amazed at so called "scientists" who continually discount the
possibility of life existing in places that known life on Earth cannot, or
life not being able to exist without this or that molecule or element (e.g.
water or carbon.) There is no reason to believe that life on other planets
(or our planet for that matter) HAS to be like life as we currently
understand it.

I completely agree with you on that.  But as of this point there is no
evidence of life on Mars.  The presence of hydrogen peroxide is no
more a sign of life than dihydro monooxide or even organic chemicals
such as complex hydrocarbons.  I am all up for finding some silicon or
hydrogen based life form but just the presence of those materials
doesn't mean that life is there as well.  Organic chemistry gives us
plenty of lessons that when there is smoke there is no fire.  Life is
complex.  Even the simple stuff.
