Because the code is very crude, but I hope some constructive
feedback. Your's is good: you "put the finger" on the main
default :)

While this is true, anything not made for a fairly standard fixed-width font with typical aspect ratio should include a statement about the font to use. With my pgmtoascii tool I've advised that people prescale the image to match the font aspect ratio. That edge dectection looks like a nice option for large solid area stuff like this, but it probably isn't going to do nice things to images with lots of thin lines. Like say the one on this page: http://www.jave.de/image2ascii/competition2001/contributions3.html That competition never got judged, but it includes a nice selection of images to tax any programatic ASCII algorithm. So I'm looking for scaling algorithm who don't break my
poor edge-detection technic :) More to come...
