Show it to a third person and see if he can tell the difference.

I've read that it takes ten years to become a _good_ airbrush artist. I
have looked at some books about airbrush and they're very much about
different techniques for what some people may look at as "cheating". A
classic way to learn to paint (and this applies to ascii art too) is to
copy pictures by famous artists.

"Tracing" isn't always so "only". Let five different people start with a
photo and see if they all "trace" identical pictures...
