In your opinion; it came out chewed up and misaligned.  For chess, 
think of the boards used for chess puzzles (or indeed game examples)
in magazines. I'm no chessplayer, so I'll have to go by memory
that the peices are notated as
   R = rook     P = pawn
   N = knight
   B = bishop
   K = king
   Q = queen
And I'll precede them with a # if black an ' if white
