I don't know about javascript and such but to get proportional fonts
in HTML you should use the <tt> and </tt> tag pair. The abbreviation
tt is supposed to stand for typewriter or teletype or something. I
can hardly believe MS would screw up such an explicit tag but then
again, you never know... The <pre> </pre> tag pair preserves the
layout of the enclosed text only in the sense that newlines and
sequences of spaces are retained (in HTML any amount of so-called
white space characters (*) is considered equivalent to a single space,
and is rendered a such). I don't recall off-hand if <tt> </tt> also
preserves extra spaces and newlines, or if you have to combine it
with <pre> </pre> to get the desired result. I feel too lazy to read
the HTML web pages right now (they are somewhere at http://www.w3.org/).
The use of <pre> might explain why people get different results
because the HTML standard does not specify what kind of font to use
for it. Some browsers use a fixed font for it because you can't really
keep a layout with proportional fonts. However, some software companies...
(*) White space characters inlude: space, tab, carriage return,
newline, vertical tab, form feed.
