Had to put a top hat on'm cause I couldn't round the top of the skull :)

As to the question, I was reading in the FAQ about "over write" 
(I think that's what it's called). Is there a way to do that in vim? I had 
a cursory look through the help, but couldn't find much.

You probably mean the Vim's "replace mode". Start is with an <R> or 
<Insert><Insert>.
