[req] DoomRL - ASCII Doom weapons for a roguelike game

[req] DoomRL - ASCII Doom weapons for a roguelike game

alt.ascii-art · 20 messages · 30 Nov 2005 - 14 Dec 2005
Hello all!
I was directed here,
that someone might help me.
I need your help :-)

	I have a specific, lenghty, and probably quite demanding request. I
seek someone who could make ASCII pictures of weapons (and maybe other
items) from the computer game Doom. I need them for my roguelike game
DoomRL (http://doom.chaosforge.org/). The requirements are:

	* must fit into half a DOS-screen (40x25)
	* must be coloured with 16 (DOS) colors, on a black background
	* technique as you like within the above limitations

	What can I offer for that? Not much unfortunately :-(. DoomRL is a
freeware game. But it is more and more popular, so your art will not be
unseen. Since the last version I had about 30-40.000 downloads (don't
know exactly, cause somewhere my counter got reseted). I can offer your
name on the credits screen and on the webpage, with full proper credit.

	Anyone here would want to help? Please?

I have never played Doom (but I saw the movie because a friend without
any taste asked me to) so I don't know the weapons. Do you have any
links to source material for the weapons? Pictures etc?

Always willing to help a rogue game.

ASCII is not colored. What you want is ANSI.

ASCII is just a character set. It doesn't say anything about color.

Not sure quite what you are looking for. Here is a sample chainsaw
that is angled to take advantage of as much of the 40x25 space as
possible. I can't do the coloring since I don't know how to do DOS
colors. Heck I didn't even have dos until I compiled DOSEMU so I
could try to run the DOS version of the game on my linux system and
found that I can't move anthing but right or left.

Exactly. There's no code for color, therefore it's black and white. To color
it you need to add ANSI color codes or something similar.

Here are some...
http://www.olddoom.com/weapons.htm

I would mostly like to see them drawn in the position called there "on
the ground", that is from the side.

I use my own coloring scheme. So basicaly I need ASCII + color
information :-).

That's quite good :-D. But after some afterthought, I think that 70x20
could also work (sideways) especialy as I want that "from the side" view.

As for DOS colors, I can give you the pallete info. As for how I code
color it's something as simple as "@gThis @ris @bfun" which prints "This
is fun", with 'This' being green, 'is' being red, and 'fun' being blue.
That's a really messy thing to do ASCII art with, I know :-(.

As for DoomRL -- then next version will be natively available for Linux
systems. Up to date, Linux users have succesfully run it using DOSbox.

Yes! :D

PS. I'm so surprised I got a positive reply :-D.

70x20 Check

What colors are available?
@r = red    @? = black
@b = blue   @? = ....
@g = green

I am a 4 year nethack player. I draw ascii art. If anyone is going
to help it will be me. I have the next 4 days off. I will get all of
them done in that time.

Well that actually depends where I will put them. The smaller the
images, the more I can do with them. If the images would be 70x20 I
could put them only in a [m]ore description. If they would be 30x15 I
could merge them with the inventory interface.

Straight from "the Source" (tm)

'r' : Red;        'R' : LightRed;     'b' : Blue;
'B' : LightBlue;  'g' : Green;        'G' : LightGreen;
'v' : Magenta;    'V' : LightMagenta; 'c' : Cyan;
'C' : LightCyan;  'l' : LightGray;    'L' : White;
'd' : DarkGray;   'D' : Black;
'n','N' : Brown;  'y','Y' : Yellow;

I directed you here months ago! Sorry I never made any more sprites. I

It's best to use something like ACiDDraw to draw the pics and colour
them with.

What about the nuke and axe and gun variants?

70x25 is too long and too narrow to work properly.
60x11 seems to work as the best scale. Not too happy with the BFG and
the pistol seems to be a hair large but I think the rest turned out all
right. Coloring is not a priority for me but I will try to get it done
this weekend. If something stops me from doing that then at least you
have basic artwork.
If you think anything needs changing because something doesn't look
sufficantly like the original weapon let me know and I will redraw it.
I was trying to stay as close to Doom style as possible but some of
them like the Plasma Rifle just needed something extra. Not sure how
Doom fans (even ones playing in ANSI) respond to things like that.

What are the 'other items' that you might need?

I believe these are the available colours:

Probably only the first 7 and black can be background colours.
The game has a black background:

Nice! :)

I took a look at <http://doomwiki.chaosforge.org/index.php/Weapons>
  and noticed a couple weapons not covered above:

Combat Knife

Combat Shotgun

|:,--__.--'  `-'    `-'   \''\
|.--'                      \__\

This is obviously just a diddle of FP's shotgun... I'm not sure what a
"Combat Shotgun" would look like, so I diddled the stock and added a clip.
