Thanks. Actualy I'm not good in 'thin' ascii-art,
I'm much better in 'thick' one, but I wanted to
try myself...

I think you should post in plain text with a fixed width (monospace font). you
picture has to be copied and pasted into Notepad before I can begin to
understand it. (this reply is in the format that you posted in)

It looked perfectly fine to me,perhaps your browser is not using the correct

The problem is only that he is using Central European encoding, and I'm guessing
that Tommy's news viewer/browser or whatever only shows Western European
(Windows) encoded messages in a fixed width font. (I'm guessing that he's using
Western European since that seems to be the format of his messages.) Tommy has
to find a way to set his news proggie to view Central European messages in a
fixed width font.

The original post =was= made in plain text. And plain text =is=
a 'fixed width' font.

There's obviously some misunderstanding here about the original
concept of 'ASCII art.'

So for the benefit of the youngsters in this group, who grew up
knowing nothing but Mikro$loth's pointee-clickee graphical
abomination (otherwise known as Win-Doze), let's define the true
nature of ASCII art.

ASCII art is designed to be displayed in 80 x 25 =TEXT MODE,=
using the computer's default character definitions...which are
contained in the BIOS.

There's no place in classic ASCII art for graphics mode, fonts,
Win-Doze, Notepad, Internet Explorer, or any of the other crap
with which Mikro$loth has polluted the modern PC.

In order to create -- and view -- ASCII art as it was originally
conceived, you must get OUT of Win-Doze, and get INTO DOS.

Once you're in that 80 x 25 text-mode DOS environment, you then
can use a DOS-based text editor to design your creation.

That's =real= ASCII art.

Using Win-Doze to design and view ASCII art is like having an

Actually neither *gg* .. It should have been "what the problem was" .. but
"where the problem was" might have worked.
Oh well , this is not an english class (heck, I could be wrong too) and you were
understood, which is really all that matters.

I feel weird already .. but thats a natural state for me .. i'm used to it :)
I will continue to do my ascii with the windows notepad , textpad or outlook
express's new message window.

Some would say making or even enjoying ascii-art is weird .. like my ex " Why
dont you just draw a picture ? " she said .. "because anyone can do that !" I
said .. "this takes skill !" .. I thought I make a good point but she still
thought I was nuts

That was good, the part about that anyone can draw a picture...

A lot!

   >Surely only the editor is important?

No; it goes way beyond that.

A graphics-mode pointee-clickee operating system isolates the
user from the machine's default 80 x 25 text-mode characters.

The characters you see on a Win-Doze screen -- and in a Win-
Doze-based editor -- bear little relation to true ASCII.

They're prettied-up, graphically-generated 'pictures' of char-
acters; not real bare-metal ASCII.

What I'm saying is that the creation and viewing of true,
=classic= ASCII art requires access to the machine's default
80 x 25 text mode characters.

You can't get that in Win-Doze.

Mikro$loth and Win-Doze are the 'fast food' of the computer
industry. They bear about as much relation to real computing
as McDonald's does to a real restaurant.

If you're satisfied with a meal of Chikken McNuggets, French
fries and a Coke, fine; you can go to McDonald's.

But if you want a meal of real oven-roasted chicken, a genuine
baked potato, and a vintage-dated varietal wine, you don't go
to McDonald's...because they don't serve that.

The choice, of course, is yours.

Texpad also supports block editing .. which rocks.

This is true.

And when you've exited to the Win-Doze pseudo-'DOS'
prompt, you're no longer in Win-Doze, per se. Even
though the Win-Doze kernel is still in control,
you're now in Virtual 86 mode.

And for purposes of ASCII art, V-86 mode is better
than being in the Win-Doze pointee-clickee gooey.
At least you have access to the =real= 80 x 25 text-
mode characters.

So if you don't have a genuine real-mode O.S. in-
stalled on your computer, Virtual 86 mode is the
next-best option.

From there, you can run a simple DOS-based text
editor (such as the freeware TED.COM program) to
create your ASCII art.

I have Win98, but use Norton Commander (from 1989) (in 80x40(?)
character mode) for almost everything (although unfortunately I have to
use the DOS 'copy' command to copy with long filenames) and EDIT for
file-editing (much better than horrible Notepad -- indent/outdent blocks
of text, automatic indenting of new lines, 9 files open at once, etc...)

It's just a lot quicker than Windows -- going from 4 directories down
back to the root directory took 7.58 seconds in Windows and 1.19 seconds
in Norton Commander. To edit a file with NC, I just select it and press
F4. To view a file in hex mode, I just use F3 then F4. It's much more
efficient than Windows (shift, right click, wait, open with, wait, wait
more, notepad, wait...), which is why I'm still using the 12-year old
program :-)

I'm going to play the devil's advocate here and claim that it took me about a
second to get to the "root" (the desktop) from four directories' depth. To edit
a file all I have to do is right-click, click "Send To", and click NotePad.
Takes no time at all. Or, if you have UltraEdit (hex viewer/text editor), all
you have to do is right-click any file and click "UltraEdit-32".

Granted, UltraEdit doesn't come with Windows, but then, NC doesn't come with DOS
either.

'Crap' is, apparently, in the eye of the beholder.

80 x 25 text mode is the environment in which ASCII art
originated, and that's what it's supposed to look like.

So what's so special about these vi keybindings? And what's the problem with any
other form of keybindings, once you actually know them?

Textpad is certianly worth the effort of downloading and taking
the time to learn some of the many things it can do.

I certianly like it for ascii art,and as an IDE for some compilers,
but it has many other good uses too.Its just great. If you work with
textfiles of anykind, like ascii art,or sourcecode of anykind, get
it and give it a try.

Yeah, this works in DOS:

But in Windows, it looks stupid. Anyway, who can be stuffed copying it to
DOS? Are there DOS newsreaders? I doubt there are, so making DOS ASCII art
is
really just being a pain in the ass, and noone will look at your art.

Not sure what you're asking here; I have no idea
what 'windows dial-up networking' is.

I can tell you that all of the DOS-based Internet
programs -- including the ones mentioned above --
are designed for pure, real DOS. They don't rely
on, or require, any Win-Doze resources.

DOS web browsers usually include a newsreader.
For those which don't, stand-alone DOS-based
newsreaders are widely available for download
from the 'Net.

My introduction to the internet was a DOS program called KA9Q. It
didn't support the web, but it did have SMTP email (is there any other
kind?) NNTP and Telnet. From memory, it all fit under 640K.

Is this relevant? How bloated is Windows, or even X?

No; not usually. Some of the DOS-based 'Net software
(such as Net-Tamer) sets up its own internal TCP/IP
stack when the program loads...so it's totally self-
contained.

Other such DOS programs require the TCP/IP stack to be
loaded separately as a TSR, but include it as part of
the distribution package.

WebSpyder is specifically designed to be used with
DR-DOS 7.xx -- which =does= have built-in networking
facilities.

Not so. DOS is a small, relatively efficient O.S. ...unlike
that bloated pointee-clickee abomination.

But more importantly, DOS allows the =user= to make the
decisions about how he wants his machine to look, act and
perform. It's a much more 'down-to-the-metal' O.S., where

Besides, DOS is ten times faster than WinDoze on any given
machine.

Plus, the DOS executable files for any productivity software
programs are 20 to 50 times smaller than a comparable WinDoze
program. A 500 meg hard disk is =more= than sufficient for
a DOS-based machine. You simply don't need a mega-gigabyte

And we haven't yet mentioned security. I think we all know
how 'secure' WinDoze is. Not! :)

Although it's a 'techie' O.S., and therefore not everyone's
cup of tea, Linux is okay. But it suffers from many of the
same ailments that afflict WinDoze: bloat, hogging of system
resources, etc., plus a relative dearth of software choices.

But if one feels that one simply MUST use a protected-mode
O.S., then yeah...Linux is a fair choice.

What a silly statement.
Try to get any OS started, how long does it take to answer the telephon?
My 286 with 1MB RAM and 12 (twelf) MHz needs 17 seconds an doesn't need
any help to answer a FAX, a call, working as a FAX-server, sends files
with the fast 56K modem, fetches files from stations.
Try that with NT, or LINUX

How does software choice for Linux compare with that for MSDOS? And not just out
of date software (e.g. web browsers have to have reasonable javascript & java
support plus CSS...)

It is shareware, but you can "evaluate" it for as long as you like, all it does

MS-DOS?

Caldera DOS?

Those pretty much all the DOS'es i can think of. Perhaps there are more?

be able to run it more than comfortably on a 100MB HDD with room to spare.

I can help you tweak as much out of the modem as you can get .. which might help

You can fit DOS on a bootdisk too , and I know that with Qube running ontop you
can multitask (though I dont know if you can fit the entire thing on a
bootdisk).

Sure it does .. FreeDOS - http://www.freedos.org/ is open-source.

I think that every OS have programs that just run faster on that particular OS.
Counterstrike f.x. runs fastest on a windows PC .. one of the reasons why I run
Windows

> >But it suffers from many of the

I'd agree with this one .. you can get loads of software for Linux and sure if
you install all of it you will have used alot of space .. but you can also
install very little and have lots of space..
Linux isn't bloated - DOS definatly isn't .. Windows IS .. but you can unbloat
95 , 98 and ME with 98lite ( www.98lite.net )
Now if only there was a program for slimming WinXP .. I mean : 1.2GB on a
standard install! (but then you dont ever have to find your CD again to install
something .. I think it keep every file from the CD somewhere on your HD)

Compared to the cirka 20 KB i can run DOS in ?
OK .. that totally bare .. stripped of everything .. but linux still (normally)
demands more of the PC than DOS.

thats a good thing.

Who cares if the processor is in protected mode .. as long as it runs good.
Any speedgain you could get from running in real mode is negible on newer
processors

   >How does software choice for Linux compare with that for MSDOS?

Badly. There's =much= less software available for Linux
than for DOS.

   >And not just out of date software (e.g. web browsers have to have
   >reasonable javascript & java support plus CSS...)

For much of the DOS-based 'Net access software (Net-Tamer,
DOS-Lynx, Arachne, et al), development is continuous and
on-going.

For productivity software (word processors, databases,
spreadsheets, etc.), obviously there's very little new
development for DOS.

Then again, how much 'new-and-now' stuff does one NEED
in an editor or a financial spreadsheet?

Most of the 'improvements' in such software since 1987
have been merely glitzy bells-and-whistles that were
tacked on to the same kernel. While these superficialities
might have made good talking points for the P.R. departments,
they added little to no additional functionality.

It's been a great source of amusement over the years to
watch all the 'software lemmings' -- those who feel that
they just HAVE to have 'the newest-and-the-now-est' --
rush right out and buy the 'latest' versions of any
given software.

In many cases, they've been stung badly. Not only are
their wallets emptier, but their 'new' versions have
often turned out to have awkward changes in the user
interface, and/or severe bugs in the programming.

Recent example? WinDoze ME. This software is severely
broken...and has caused untold frustration and grief for
uncounted numbers of individual users and small businesses.

But...I'm a realist. I recognize that the 'herd instinct,'
plus a degree of neophilia, is inherent in human nature.

Consequently, Mikro$loth's pointee-clickee operating sys-
tems will continue to dominate the PC market. As long as
M$ has the money and the resources to continue promoting
its barely adequate O.S.es, the technically unsophisticated
public will continue to lap'em up.

After all, we all want to 'belong,' and to be well-thought-of
by our peers...don't we? Mikro$loth is banking (and I =do=
mean BANKING) on people's desire for that kind of conformity! ;)

Linux is smaller and more efficient than DOS?!? This
simply isn't true, son.

Multitasking can be easily accomplished in DOS. I multitask
all the time. The only difference is, multitasking capability
is not =built in= to DOS. You just have to use third-party
multitasking software. But that's no big deal.

   >You can even fit it on a boot disk.

Not a =full= Linux; only a very bare-bones install.

That's a GOOD thing. It's a 'plus; a feature! :)

Guess we have a different definition of 'efficient.' DOS needs
only 128 =kilobytes= of lower RAM. And =no= extended memory is
required!

   >It looks like you really haven't used Linux.

I've used it...and still use it occasionally for a few
specific purposes.

But it looks like =you're= not very familiar with DOS! :)

(In all fairness, it should be pointed out that I'm talking
about =real,= true DOS...not the pseudo-'M$-DOS Prompt'
that one can invoke from within WinDoze.)

With a full-featured DOS-based 'Net access program (such as
Net-Tamer), all possible Internet functions (Mail, Usenet,
Ping, Finger, ICQ, MIME...you name it) are already available
=within that one program.= It's a totally integrated suite of
functions. There's no need for 'another program to want to
use the Internet.'

Once you exit the program, the TCP/IP stack goes away.

I've never tried this, but I suppose you could shell to DOS

PTS DOS

I do not use it, but in a test of different DOSes it was the fastest
one (i know, that depends on what you test...) - and the latest
version i know supports VFAT16 with long file names. Maybe there is
already one that supports FAT32.

Then get a downloadmanager, that way you can spread a large download over a
couple of days (or weeks if you want).
Personally, i like Go!Zilla, but there are many other downloadmanagers, many of

That reminds me of 4DOS, when i still used MS-DOS as my main OS, i had about all
off the errormessages replaced by silly stuff.
For instance, instead of "Bad command or filename" i got a "Whaddayamean
<command>? Go try something else!" and when i typed "Format A:" i got a
"A-Formatting we go, a-formatting we go" (at which point it would format the
floppy in drive A: of course).
Then i got Win3.1 and you could start it of course by typing "win" but i made an
alias that would cause the command "lose" to perform the same action with the
difference that if i left Windows, 4DOS would greet me back again with "Welcome
back, had fun?"
"Bye" would play a sad little diddy and then reboot the machine and "Dirt" would
do a "dir /ogens/p". The last alias was born out of despair really, i made that
type-o a lot back then (darn keys, they shouldn't have put them so close togeter
i tell 'ya)
Another fun thing was that you could colorize different filetypes, i forgot
which filetype had what color, but i do remember that executables were cyan,
image files were magenta, directories were bright green and soundfiles were
yellow or brown, all of the other files that i hadn't classified as
such-and-such a file were grey.

Yes, i had a lot of fun with 4DOS, i might install it again one day, i think i
still have the alias file lying around somewhere. If only i have my batchfiles
on disk too, i could be up and running soon as i did when i was young (i
actually put them in c:\belfry, after a tagline a once read)

There is.

I made one myself once too .. I had a driver that would sound out wave output
piped to it , Then I just used a l3enc to decode a mp3 and piped the output to
the driver/pipe.

.. but you dont need to do all that .. you could f.x. check out
http://www.8ung.at/dos/mp3.htm for a old but comprehensive list of MP3 player
for DOSS

or just type in dos mp3 player in Google

THough its quite off topic....

I too reccomend installing Ad-Aware and using it everytime you install
something new...I am often supprised at howmany people i talk to
dont even know about such things,so i am not too upset to post a
little here about it.

If you dont know about spyware or evne if you do then go here
http://www.secure-search.f2s.com/software/spyw_soft.htm
where you can read a little and also have access to some
utlities and some web sites like:
http://www.spychecker.com/ where you can check stuff before
you install it.

As Krogg said some spyware also makes your system unstable .. and some of them
slow your computer .. either just by running in the background all the time or
by sending and recieving stuff to/from the internet .. adware in particular
keeps loading adbanners.

I recommend you remove all the spyware with ad aware , then optimize your modem
connection with EasyMTU , install Webwasher so your wont have to download all
thoose ad's on the many websites and finally install the PH_webpatch found on
www.speedguide.net so you always use your full bandwidth when browsing.

Kind Regards

For the purpose at hand of producing ASCII art, either a will work just
fine. All that is needed is a fixed pitch font that supports the true
ASCII character set or a super set of it. You should know that since you

drsquare, you can not sell people on the use of Linux by employing such
lies anf half truths. A very minimal Linux can be made to fit on a floppy
or two; however, that would be be workable for only certain limited
purposes, such as running a firewall/router, a rescue floppy, or a
emergency restore from backups. But that is not what your are refering to
here, you are referring to a boot floppy, that is a floppy disk that
contains only the Linux kernel or perhaps a Linux kernel and a boot loader
like syslinux or lilo.

There is no way that Linux is smaller than Dos. Linux has many strong
selling points and can stand on those facts alone. You do not need to lie
inorder to promote it. Getting people to try Linux based on your lies,
you are setting them up for disappointment and will hurt rather than help
Linux's reputation.

Perhaps that is a new tactic of the winvocates.

Are you still unaware of FreeDos for which the source code is freely

Offer benchmarks to support your statement, or do not make such claims.

Stop FUDing. Yes, Linux can boot from a floppy or a network boot PROM and
use a NFS fileserver to provide its root parition. But that says nothing
about how much disk it does need on the fileserver.

That may be the minimun RAM required, however you need at least 12Megs to
16Megs of RAM for a general purpose host, in order to avoid thrashing of
the swap partitions and or swap files. Of course that amount you need is
dependent what software you plan to run and how many simultanious users
you plan to have running programs at once.

What about an 8086, 8088, 80186, 80188, or 80286? What about a 80386 with
1Meg or 640K RAM? Dos and Minix can run on those boxes while Linux can
not.

As to bloat, my first Linux installation was on a 20Meg HD partition and
the installation media was about a quarter of one CD. Today's Linux comes
on multiple CD's. That may seem to be bloating; however, what is in fact
being delivered is much more software than was available a decade ago. No
one had to install all or most of that software. It is up to the sysadmin
to install the software as per the needs of the host's userbase or that
required by the dedicated taks(s) of that host. BTW one would shudder to
think of the cost and storage requirements of that much software provided
for the Windows platform.

P.S. I have crossposted this message to COLA, so that real Linux
Advocates can see how drsquare is representing Linux beyond the confines
of COLA.

Yes, you can.

Windows 9x and Windows ME is the Windows environment running on the Dos
operating system. Dos will not be dead as long as there is someone who
wants to run it.

Dos != MS-Dos

The conversation is limited to MS-Dos only when "MS-Dos" is cited by name.
There are a number of various Dos operating systems. Dos is the generic
name for all of them.

You can dump the Windows 9x GUI, just edit one file in the root directory
of the boot disk changing GUI= option. Then delete the windows and
Program Files directory trees, then the Windows GUI is history and you are
running MS-Dos 7.x.

Speak for yourself, most of us do not eat live animals. We also do not
react to the deaths of the people killed by the 9/11 attacks as you do and
would not feel as you do when you said about those deaths:

"In fact, I've never been more overjoyed. I've just sent off for the plane
ticket so I can come over and dance on all the graves, whilst waving my
Afghanistan flag in the air."

www.toms.net has a single floppy system, (running on a floppy formatted
to 1.7MB.) It's not smaller than dos, but it is very full featured.
Including of course a full tcp-ip stack which dos lacked, and all the
other niceties that a modern OS brings with it. It would be an error to
claim that it was as small as dos, but it's not much bigger, and it does
oh-so much more.
(Tom's rootboot rocks!) IMHO, the best of the single floppy distros.

When someone says dos, it's usually in reference to MS-DOS, which you
cannot (legally) change the code of.

true, wild exagerations are counterproductive.

I'm using Opera so I do not see banners on websites cause I turned off
pictures. The only banners I see is one in DAP and one in Opera.

Propably I would do it (one year ago I used to use Webwasher), but right
now I can only use my computer when I'm home -- at weekends -- so I have
no time to "play" with all this software... Either the way thank you.
