Dear Group, I have been reading all faqs and lurking and reading all posts before I jump into this project and I still need some clarification if you don't mind: Here's what I understand to be true as an "AOLer": 1. My only available font on this newsreader is NOT a fixed width. 2. There is no way to remedy that situation. 3. If I want my art to look ok to other folks in the group, I must create my art on Notepad and cut and paste it to my newsgroup window. Here's my questions??? 1. When I do this my art appears nasty to me but will look ok to you SO.... will my art look as bad to other AOL'ers??? 2. Does this mean that I would have to post 2 versions of my art? One that looks good to folks on aol and one that is correct when viewed with a fixed width newsreader? The reason I ask is that most of my family members are also AOL'ers and I would like to be able to show them my art to oooh and ahhhh over. Thanks for all your help Karen (kar...@aol.com) Enlightenment: do what you want, eat what there is..... New disciple of the Lazy Path of Enlightenment. (guidelines available for the asking).

That is correct: from memory I think the AOL newsreader insists on using the Arial font. > 2. There is no way to remedy that situation. There may be a way in newer versions of the AOL newsreader, I'm not sure. (Joan? Can you help me out here?) > 3. That's correct -- Notepad, or any other text editor set to use a fixed-width font (eg Courier or Fixedsys). > Here's my questions??? > 1. When I do this my art appears nasty to me but will look ok to you > SO.... will my art look as bad to other AOL'ers??? Unfortunately yes ... unless they do the reverse at their end -- copy the art from the newsreader, and paste it into Notepad. > 2. Does this mean that I would have to post 2 versions of my art? > One that looks good to folks on aol and one that is correct when > viewed with a fixed width newsreader? > > The reason I ask is that most of my family members are also AOL'ers > and I would like to be able to show them my art to oooh and ahhhh > over. Well, remember that the vast majority of Usenet readers, and alt.ascii-art people in particular, use a fixed-width font (ie they are not AOLers). And they would get annoyed if this group started filling up with pictures which meant nothing to them. So ... If you wish to create a separate Arial art (as opposed to ASCII art) version of your pictures, do so by all means, and send them to your family members by e-mail, but *don't* post them here. If you want your family members to see the fixed-width art you've posted here, then tell them how to copy it and paste it into Notepad to see it correctly. > Thanks for all your help It's a pleasure. -- .._o Matthew Thomas (FAQ maintainer) ..://\/ http://cantua.canterbury.ac.nz/~mpt26/ (Site for sore eyes) ..:_/\ ASCII ART FAQ: http://cantua.canterbury.ac.nz/~mpt26/art/ascii/ ..:/ Linux. Absolutely true to all. However, there are some options for fonts if you upgrade to AOL 4.0-- I'm not sure if that includes newsgroup. >1. When I do this my art appears nasty to me but will look ok to you SO.... >will my art look as bad to other AOL'ers??? Yes. >2. Does this mean that I would have to post 2 versions of my art? One that >looks good to folks on aol and one that is correct when viewed with a fixed >width newsreader? No- don't post the AOL version- we really don't want to see it here. AOL is just a micro-spot on the entire internet-- many more people can view the ASCII art if it is in a fixed-width font such as Courier or FixedSys. If you want to make your pics for your family and AOLers, feel free to-- just don't share them with this newsgroup. -joan spu...@juno.com ASCII ART GALLERY: http://www.ascii-art.com
