This one was very very hard to do. It also has a bug in it that I
think is completely unfixable so I had to work around it as much as
possible while making it still usable. The guy who made the first
one of these is a genius but didn't offer any documentation on how to
pull this off. For instance I think that it is impossible to properly
align things so that a 5 letter word can not be in the foreground with
a flawless background yet any other odd numbered lines are not a
problem.

Hm, when viewed by a normal 2eyed person that can see those things, what's it look like? Actual text, or a picture ? And, any chance of a jpeg or something of what it looks like when u can see those things? What? You don't have a network card in your head to download images from your brain? Damn :( T :)

For anyone out there with the software. 1) take a static picture of the whole thing. 2) "tilt" it at about a 5% angle so that the bottem of the image is just slightly bigger than the top. 3) and blur the whole thing just a hair. 4) take another picture of the original and inlarge it by maybe 5% 5) Sharpen the key text and turn the rest of the second image into a 100% transparancy 6) layer image two over image one. Post to some binary group where he can see it > What? You don't have a network card in your head to download images from your > brain? Damn :( Not any more. I wouldnt be able to tell what it was if you hadnt told me, though. I think the version I came out with reads better ... "frog all the work and spit a no play server my down year left here makes start the jack" ... it's the "frog all the work bit" i like ;-) well done ;-) I stuck it on the web here ... http://www.tinyirc.net/stereograms/attempt1.jpg Damn, now I have to go through all the previous messages and see what comes out ;-) btw, even tho it's not exactly right, my initial saying when i hit paste on the second layer to do the overlay bit was: "WOAH" .. out loud, too :) I'm not sure if I rotated too far or made the second part too large, but a little playing around should come up with it. I'll post URLs to the final images I come up with if nobody objects.

I just put up butterfly.jpg candy.jpg and karla.jpg in the same directory, but they didnt come out very well. I think perhaps I'm not understanding exactly what you meant with the method. I'll play around with it some more and see if I can get it right. Whilst writing this, I did attempt2.jpg in same place, thats same as before but with no rotate. attempt3.jpg was an experiment with resizing. You might not want to look at it, it will make your eyes go extremely blurry! Mine are still messed up now and I only looked at it long enough to save it :/ T.

Well each one has to be handled differently. The instructions I posted were just for that one drawing. But they did work out rather well. Now just take those images and think about how they would look full screen size and where the layers over lap just so that the parts that are seen over lapping each other are more "forward" and the parts that appear only once are more "residual" and thus the effect of depth is complete. > Ahhh. I'll try again without the rotation. I think I misunderstood what you > meant by tilt ... something like this? (exaggerated) > ______ > / \ > /________\ This would work best. And remember to set the transparancy to 100% on the second one accept where the text I designated is which should be set to 0% trans. > And with key text, did u mean cut out everything except the words that are > supposed to be there ? Hi Tom It is very difficult to represent the 3d ascii pictures because normally when something is close to you it appears larger. In stereo-grams the closer things become smaller! (very slightly). But they still seem closer! How do you explain to someone who is blind what it is like to see? Things seem outside of you but they can't be. (maybe that is slightly less pronounced when looking through one eye. I have noticed that things appear slightly less bright, and slightly less detailed) Your picture does express something about the *process* of seeing a 3d image, because the characters begin to overlap. But you have shown them overlapping vertically, whereas actually they would only overlap horizontally. A good way to demonstrate this would be to use an animation. But your picture is excellent, because the very centre shows that clarity which emerges when the 3d information comes together, ie overlapping of identical characters. regards - Michael "Tom Bampton" <mol...@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:apnlnp$9e2$1$830...@news.demon.co.uk... > > "Faux_Pseudo" <Fau...@yahoo.comERCIAL> wrote in message > news:slrnaruiv3.knf.Faux_Pseudo@fugozi.cx1209071-a... > > _.--- Tom Bampton spoke in alt.ascii-art --------._ > I stuck it on the web here ... > > http://www.tinyirc.net/stereograms/attempt1.jpg

Hah, I discovered that after a few minutes messing abnout with it ;-) > How do you explain to someone who is blind what it is like to see? Things On the flip side, how do you explain to someone who can see what it's like to be blind ? Most normally sighted people cannot comprehend it. I have been blind in one eye (sorry to repeat, dont know if u saw previous threads) since I was 2 or 3, and thus have never seen nor ever will see what a stereogram looks like for real. Which means all I have to go on is what people tell me, and like you say explaining that is very difficult. I'm going to try FP's other suggestions a bit later on and see how it turns out. > seem outside of you but they can't be. > (maybe that is slightly less pronounced when looking through one eye. I have > noticed that things appear slightly less bright, and slightly less detailed) What I see and what you see when you look through one eye is probably completely different, since thats all I'm used to and my brain's adjusted to it. > Your picture does express something about the *process* of seeing a 3d > image, because the characters begin to overlap. Hopefully eventually I'll get it right. Then I can see properly all those stereograms posted recently ;-) > But your picture is excellent, because the very centre shows that clarity > which emerges when the 3d information comes together, ie overlapping of > identical characters. It also hurts my eye heheh. I was very very shocked when I saw it sort of work. That's one thing about doing it this way, the change is instant, drammatic and it stays there. Though, it may be that way with the normal way of seeing them, but i dunno :) T.

Most normally sighted people cannot comprehend it. I have been blind in You are right. it is very difficult to understand. I think that if I became blind i would have to change quite abit. Maybe my ways of interacting with others would have to change - and maybe I would have to become more aware. I guess that being blind in one eye it is something you have thought about alot and understand well? > one eye (sorry to repeat, dont know if u saw previous threads) since I was 2 or > 3, and thus have never seen nor ever will see what a stereogram looks like for > real. The closer together they are horizontally, the nearer they project stereo-scopically. The further apart horozontally, the further back they appear. Somehow the brain is able to capture all of this information simultaneously (There are limits to the range of variation in depth which can be viewed simultaneously though) - to create a very vivid, multi-layered image. The characters in the for-ground, and those in the background, have the same degree of detail. Somehow they all appear more vivid. <SNIP> > It also hurts my eye heheh. Maybe there are some scientist out > there who understand it? The way the eye works is complex ... if you have two eyes, the left eye and right eye do not look at the same thing. They're slightly to the side of each other and the brain puts the two images together to make something 3D. With time, the brain can compensate and with one eye you can see pseudo-3D, that is you can judge depth as well as you could with 2 eyes. That's my limited understanding of it anyway, but trying to replicate that effect in a paint program is pretty damn difficult as I've been finding out :) > <SNIP> > > On the flip side, how do you explain to someone who can see what it's like > to be > > blind ? Maybe my ways of interacting with > others would have to change - and maybe I would have to become more aware. As soon as you lose sight, your other senses become much much better then they were previously. Your hearing improves immensely, and your 6th sense does too. It's weird and hard to explain. The humain brain adepts extremely quickly to circumstances, and most of that adapting you're not even aware of. So, really, it's not a case of "have to become more aware," it just happens and you realise it has after the fact. Try walking around your house and doing the things you usually do with your eyes shut (or blindfolded, which is easier) ... you'll find you dont actually need to see, because where everything is is so imprinted on your brain you can do anything from making a cup of tea to taking a leak without the need of vision. If you're taken out of that environment, e.g. you go to a shop, it becomes much much harder because the locations of things are not imprinted in your mind and thus you have trouble, and probably need someone to help you. > I guess that being blind in one eye it is something you have thought about > alot and understand well? Yeh, I think about it quite a lot. Like the 3D thing I said above. I have no trouble judging depth or distance, and as far as I'm concerned I can see in 3D. Of course, no normally sighted person or doctor will agree with me on that one since it's not real 3D. I suppose you can think of it in terms of a 3D computer game. The depth in that is just an illusion based on colours on the screen, likewise light and shadow give my vision depth. The part most sighted people have problems understanding is when you're blind, you can't see *ANYTHING*. It's absolutely nothing like shutting your eyes, because when you do that you are seeing black, which if you're blind you can't even see that. It's very very difficult to comprehend unless you've been there. > > 3, and thus have never seen nor ever will see what a stereogram looks like > for > > real. One thing I noticed with messing around with the streogram was when two characters overlap, it makes them more bold. The background chars are lighter which gives the sense of depth. It's probably something like that that gives the vividness. I am usually really good at visualisation, but this is giving me a headache because the image is so complex it's hard for me to visualise how it's supposed to be. > > It also hurts my eye heheh. I was very very shocked when I saw it sort of > work. > > Does it get tiring having to see things through one eye? Or have you got > used to it? I'm used to it. I've been this way for over 20 years. Sometimes my eye gets tired. When I was at school I was known to type entire reports on the computer with my eyes shut, including formatting and everything, mostly because sometimes staring at a computer screen hurts. Tho, for some reason certain pictures makes my eyes water like hell. They sort of draw you into them and your brain is arguing with what you see and it just makes your head spin. I have a few pictures I made a while back like that, as well as that "stereogram" when I was messing around with the resize part. T.

And all of the zebras have the same amount of detail, and the same clarity (which is more vivid than normal.) The strong sense of depth is there but all the usual clues of depth are absent. > tired.
